Crazy Climber. Is it worth it?
So a local store that I work for just got in a copy of Crazy Climber for the Atari 2600. It works like new, and looks like new (no marker, gum, dirt). As a collector I was debating on whther or not I should pick it up. I normally would have but there was one thing in the way. The $85.00 price tag. I'm sure the guy I work for may cut me a deal on that, as he usually does. But I want to hear what you guys think. Pick it up or no?

$80 is about right, looking at eBay ads. What's interesting is the box and instructions are worth more than the game. Last year I picked up them for $250 to go along with my loose game. Complete, it's a $400+ game.
Sometimes with a rare game like that it's just better to pay a little more and take it. You can probably get it for a better price in the Atari Age marketplace or a gaming con, but if you can get it in good condition in your hands tomorrow, I say it's worth it. It's not like it's $185.
Price aside, it's a fairly accurate Atari recreation of the original arcade game. I actually enjoy playing it quite a bit. So it's not like you're paying top dollar for a shitty game that will gather dust on the shelf. It's actually FUN!
Still Around...Still Gamin'...
It's a very decent version of the game considering it's on 2600 ... and for a popular arcade title of that era, it didn't wind up on many home consoles.
It doesn't have a dual joystick mode, but it plays well using a one stick and button setup.
$85 is a lot, but it was only available by mail through the Atari Age club and is relatively rare so it's a reasonable price as well.
I'll say this, you could wind up with a lot LESS FUN expensive, rare 2600 games.
I don't suppose it has the box or manual, does it?

Crazy Climber is one of the few 2600 carts I still REALLY want. I've always had $100 as the magic number in my mind, so to see it going for much cheaper makes my heart (and wallet) feel much better for when I get around to buying one.

No manual, no box. Just the cartridge, like I said, is in perfect condition. The guy who brought it in said that he has owned it since the 80's and he got it brand new. He lost the box and the manual was utterly destroid (didn't say how).
I'll pick it up if it's worth it.
On a side note, how rare is Air Raid? The guy that I work for says it is one of the rarest atari 2600 games there is.

I would pass since its cart only.
And Air Raid is very rare. The last auction I saw went for around $350.
Can people stop it with the Ebay prices..one one one game isn't worth anything, the next day there's like 15 people bidding like nuts
Don't ever go on ebay for pricing
Unfortunately, there really aren't many other publically accessible alternatives for pricing. The DP Guide hasn't been updated in years and the other guides I have seen are pretty worthless. For items like this which are scarce but still come up regularly, you can search Ebay history and get a pretty good idea of what people are paying over several auctions. It is far from perfect, but it gives a good current ballpark, especially when supplemented with institutional memory on a site like this for what items have gone for on the marketplace areas of here and Atari Age.Originally Posted by MarioMania

Just as long as one does not price the games according to what I call "the crazies", or those sellers who are adamant that their $500 Samurai Shodown Anthology (PS2) or $800 Pocket Reversi (NGPC) will sell.
Still funny how those games remain unsold for months, even years, and they (the sellers in question) refuse to lower the price.

There are so many overstuffed BIN auctions around, if you use those as your baseline, you'll never sell something.
Conversely, a $10 game can fluctuate anywhere from a $1 to $15, depending on how lucky you are. See also: tubeway's eBay thread about lack of real auctions.
I've found if I want an idea on pricing, either take an average of all the retarded BINs I can find and take 66% to 75% of that value - that's the real worth - or take an average of all normal auctions at 100%.

I'm generally willing to pay *more* for a game that's in front of my face that I can take home, rather than go on ebay and cross my fingers. Especially for a rare game that's actually playable....that's why I laugh when people say the Radiant Silverguns, Final Fantasy VIIs, and Panzer Dragoon Sagas of the world are overpriced, but over a period of a year will pay $60 for 7 or 8 games that aren't worth $10 when the dust settles.

And I'd pay $80 for it, too. But I wouldn't pay over $90. Even shrinkwrapped, I woudn't pay over $100.
And you didn't grab it? I offered $2,000 last time it was on eBay and some guy laughed in my face. It can go for $4,000.
Well he told me if it doesn't sell within the next two months he'll lower it to $70. Also I bought 15 gamegear games off of him for $25 flat today. THey're all pretty good and some collectibles from what I've been told.
Guess I'll wait and see what happens in 60 days.
