Default Raiden Trad (gen) variant cover?

I was at a pawn shop today that had a pile of games and buried amongst them was a copy of Raiden Trad for the Sega Genesis. Something struck me as odd though, the cover art. Not the red ship I remember, but a weird grayish, off-color ship and BIGNET in large print on the cover. I have never seen this version and after searching hundreds of images, I found this one tiny thumbnail.

I can't find any info regarding alternate versions. Is this a legit variant? Does anyone here have this version of the game?

I used to have a copy of Raiden Trad for Genesis (the one with the red & green cover) and I remember it coming with some kind b&w insert saying how it was the new re-release version with "more exciting" cover art (or something like that). Maybe the one you found was the original release?

Hmm, thanks for the reply. It is so weird, I never saw that as a kid, only the red & green cover. I bought the game for a few bucks from the pawnshop, but unfortunately the game and instructions feature that red ship (pretty well worn, though the jacket art is still in good condition). The shrinkwrap was pretty crunchy and brittle so I think it was wrapped several years ago.

So now I wonder if there is a copy of the actual game and instructions with the ugly grey ship. Thousands of images and I could only find one thumbnail of the ugly boxart... ha.

Not the price I paid, lol

    ugh

I have both versions of the game. The cart and instructions that came with my grey ship box were the same.

The same as the OP's or the same as the art on the box?

The instruction manuals match the red/green cover box, as do the carts. The only difference I see on mine is the actual cover art on the boxes.

Thanks for the reply. To me, it sounds pretty likely that only the covers are different. Granted, we're only talking two copies here, but really, the odds of both of you having switched boxes is quite slim. This is a fun little variant that I'd never heard of. Thanks, guys!
