Default Any way to make this plug'n'play ColecoVision use original carts?

    Saw this on ebay:

A Colecovision Chinese (presume) clone plug'n'play.

Can one of these be modded to use original Coleco game carts? (if so, how).

    Anyone got links / details?

I've seen these in local stores, drug stores like Walgreens. It's legit. Even if it's somehow possible, you'll have to do extensive modding to do it, might as well get a real Colecovision for all that trouble.

Not a Colecovision. They're just using the Coleco name,

Like Leo said, it's fake. I own one, and it's just a cheap 8-bit style ripoff. I mean, the diving game is a ripoff of Space Invaders and it uses noises from Super Mario Bros.! Commodore, Atari and Namco respect their past in TV games, yet still no respect for the Colecovision. Still, is the Intellivision TV game an 8-bit ripoff or is it the real games?

I also have it, and I agree that all the games are complete crap and a waste of time to play. I don't know what it goes for on Ebay but you can find it on Amazon for just a few dollars.

The Intellivision one is shit - nothing like the original games on the Intellivision. The sprites in Night Stalker move differently and look differently and act differently; same true for others there too.

Yeah, I was wondering if the Coleco was just crap games on a Coleco compatible chip (ie a Coleco on a chip) or some crap NES type clones of remakes of Coleco games (ie using incompatible chip).

I have a proper ColecoVision, however the composite mod gives a rainbow effect, I was hoping if the plug'n'play was a proper Coleco on a chip, that it could be modded to take proper legit Coleco game carts. Like some NES on a chip plug'n'plays can be modded to use original NES carts.

    yes/no?

That Coleco unit is a piece of junk. It has absolutely nothing to do with the Colecovision. There's nothing to mod or anything. In fact, I'm not even sure who owns the "Coleco Vision" brand/rights? I know Hasbro bought out things like Cabbage Patch Kids, and River West, now out of business, released the Coleco Sonic. That at least had Sega Master/Game Gear games on it. I also know that some people have used it's LCD screen for other projects.

    Thanks for the info.

Telegames took over the rights to ColecoVision and produced that crappy Dina 2-in-1 system. No idea what happened to Telegames and who took them over though.

It's not supposed to be Colecovision, it doesn't say "Colecovision" anywhere on it. It contains TV recreations of the old LED Coleco handheld games from the 70's.

I already said it wasn't a Colecovision. It's using the Coleco brand name. That's as far as any relationship with the Colecovision goes.

I'm unaware of who owns the Colecovision brand, I always assumed Telegames had. The last owners of the Coleco brand that I'm aware of was River West Brands, which someone in this thread has stated as going out of business.

My guess is Telegames still owns the rights, but they are pretty much useless for them. Coleco developed only a few of their own games, most were arcade ports. So you'd have to license them again from Nintendo, Konami, Exidy, etc. The ColecoVision architecture itself was not proprietary (all off the shelf parts), so all they own is rights to the logo essentially.

I don't believe Telegames every had the rights; they sold a Coleco clone, but it was made in the Far East (and it's not clear if "Dina" (Bit Corp) had the rights, or reverse engineered the CV to make their system). Telegames sold Coleco games, and obviously got the rights to sell some other CV games under their label, but as far as I know they never bought the copyrights of any Coleco games, nor bought any service marks or trademarks.

Yes, this Coleco tvgame unit is about the Coleco handheld games from the 70's. River West Brand did pay for the rights to use Coleco and ColecoVision names, and that's why they asked a company to make products with the name Coleco on them.

As far as I understand the situation, Telegames still own the rights on many original ColecoVision games.

What I've heard about thw console "Dina 2-in-1" is that Bit Corp. did a console named "Personal Arcade" and then Telegames bought it to release it under the name "Dina 2-in-1". Both versions are similar and can play about 90% of the Colecovision games and Sega SG1000 games. The missing 10% is because of the lack of support for the roller controller, the steering wheel, the superaction controller, or expansion module.
Long time no see. Still playing my coleco games?

Indeed, however one main difference between the Colecovision and the Dina 2-in-1 is the ColecoVision was made with cheap components, but was put together well, whereas the Dina looks and feels horrible; a pretty bad product.
