Default Netflix coming to Wii Spring 2010

Ok, I may get flamed for this, but I can't seem to find anything else posted about this.

I was doing some research for my VG blog OTRGamer, and found this. Shameless plug for my blog, I know, but it has the full write up I would post here anyhow.

When NetFlix realizes PR is part of the US, and starts streaming video, I will become a member.

Though this is great news for Wii owners.

For some reason, I can't imagine this being executed well. I'm sure Netflix was pushing for this way more than Nintendo was.

    To paraphrase port:

Take a baseball and then take a piece of paper and cut a circular hole in it so only a small portion of the baseball can fit through. Place the baseball in that hole and look at it from the opposite side the baseball is on. The paper is the Wii, Netflix is the baseball.
RIP bargora, you will be greatly missed. That is how we do things on Giedion Prime.

First off, what the hell are you quoting with the Baseball analogy? Are you saying NetFlix is going to throw a base ball at my Wii? or that I get free baseballs but I am going to have a hard time getting them through my Wii CD drive slot?

Second, what is an "Unlimited" NetFlix account? I thought their accounts were rated by how many disks you could get at a time. ie: 1 disk out at a time, 3 Disks out at a time, 5 disks out at at a time etc. I was under the impression that no matter how many disks you had out at a time, once you returned one, you would get the next one. Am I wrong?

    Thats my Baseball!

Netflix should push Nintendo for an HD upgrade as the service would be more limited by the lack of HD.

Netflix unlimited is related to the streaming content. There used to be a 1-DVD plan that excluded streaming. I think they all include it now.

I hope Nintendo also puts out a better storage solution so it can be installed and run straight from the console. This would have to be after the contract with MS runs out, though.

Ok, I'm on my laptop and not jus ton the iPhone now, so I checked the plans and rates. Apparently, they do have a 1-out, $4.99 a month plan that includes 2 hours of streaming video. All others are unlimited.

i dont think they care, netflix sees millions of wii systems sitting in homes (more than the number of ps3s and 360s combined) and each one of those boxes are a potential customer. those boxes can deliever content without any additional hardware investment from either netflix or the consumer.

DVD's don't do HD either. Why do they need HD?

Does Netflix even allow downloads? I thought they only did streaming (aside from mailing discs). Streaming does not need a bunch of storage.

The app needs the space. Its not exactly small, something like 100mb. Doesn't sound like much, but my Wii is almost full, just from game saves and a few VC downloads.

Surely they can make a smaller version of the app for Wii. I mean it doesn't really "do anything" other than stream video, there's no reason it needs to be 100mb.

Although yes, I do agree that the Wii's storage space is inadequate in general.

To just stream video, it doesn't. However, between the account management, menus, and everything else it has to use and cache, it does. I'm sure they could slim it down, but it would be worthless at that point.
