Default Save Problem with my copy of Chrono Trigger on snes. (the battery is not dead)

So, after picking up chrono trigger a while ago, I played it. So, I got 10:00 hours through the game. Everything was fine. After a certain point, after saving, The saves would not update, and the save screen remained the same. The # of saves and hours of gameplay and location never changed after saving. I play for a few more hours, get my ass handed to by that two hand boss, and I go back to the save screen and there is the un-updated save that i have been seeing the whole time. Nothing saved.

I tried saving in the 2nd slot, and when that happened, the third slot file, was copied into the 2nd slot with one less # of saves. I tried deleting the 3rd file, but when i turn chrono trigger back on, it is still there, un-deleted. I have no clue what has been going on, any of you know?

How can you be so sure the battery is not dead? Did you replace it with a fresh one yourself? Maybe it's dying.

Otherwise, I'd check if the contacts are clean.

The game's too short anyway, an extra few hours of time won't kill you.

Seriously, probably the best RPG I've ever played. It's just so... short.

... which is why you can play through it over and over for all the different endings. One of the few games I bothered to do that with.

Can anyone tell me HOW to change the battery? I want to start playing the game, but it has been in storage for over 10 years so I am assuming the battery could use replacing.

I've been meaning to do that myself, although it'll probably be a while as I just now got a copy and beat it. So far just gotten the ending from beating Lavos at the very end and very beginning of the game.

You don't really have to play through Chrono Trigger to get all the endings. Just play through it a second time. Every time you have a new objective, go beat the game. Load the game and progress through the story, get to the next ending.

The battle where Crono dies against Lavos you can get an ending also, but it's the exact same ending as if you finished off Lavos at the very start of the game(the developer's room ending.)

Unless you've confirmed it's dead, don't bother. Most Chrono Trigger batteries still work. Most games with batteries even from the 80s still work, so Chrono Trigger from 1995 isn't so old in comparison to those.
