Default anyone else prefer EGA over VGA?

maybe its just nostalgia but whenever a game that was origionaly released in EGA is redone in VGA i seem to just prefer the visual style of EGA. just seems to have so much more character and vibrancy as opposed to VGA dispite the fact of extra colors and details in the VGA version. alot of these games i never even played when they first came out so i can't chock it up completely to the nostalgia factor, anyone else or is it just me?

I remember when I went from 4 colours to 16 with my EGA card. All the Sierra games looked amazing. I replayed like... everything. I remember SQ3 looking completely different.

EGA? Damn kids, don't know they're born and stuff.

Hercules and CGA, that's where it's at!

    it depends on the game.

Ultima IV is much nicer with a VGA patch.

what games are you referencing, as an example?

Sort of in the same ballpark (since outside a C64 i never PC Games)...but after playing PSX games in HDMI for so long, it's amazing to see how gorgeous they really were in S-Video.

    Nostalgia for the win.

EGA is decent, but VGA is my preference.

i won't deny VGA looks better on a technical level. you would have to be blind to think otherwise. maybe its just a kind of artisitc style i like better in EGA. i've also seen many games that look breathtakeingly beautiful in VGA. i think i'm mostly thinking of games that origionally came out in EGA then they do a VGA remake. even if the gameplay is exactlly the same i just prefer the look of the older EGA version.

best examples i can think of would be older adventure games, kings quest 1, leasure suit larry, monkey island, space quest. the vga remakes obviously have more detail and color by far but it it seems like they lost alot of "character" if that makes any sence

just seems to have a unique charm about it.

Ahh, I understand. This is why I don't like Super Mario All-Stars very much.

Sierra's VGA remakes were rather thoroughly different from the original releases. It hardly seems right to suggest that they indicate some trend about VGA graphics in general.

And Monkey Island in VGA looks much, much better than it does in EGA. As you say, you'd have to be blind.

I had a similar experience with New Super Mario Brothers Wii. I feel like the original Supoer Mario Brothers on the NES looks better; but I know it isn't so.

Back in the day I was stuck with Tandy 16 bit graphics, which is essentially EGA. The diffference was that not all games sup;ported or were compatible with Tandy 16-bit so some of my games had to be played in CGA. Thus when I upgraded to VGA all my hassle was gone and there was no looking back...

The only game I really prefer in EGA when a VGA version is available is Loom. The VGA version cut a lot of dialog out, since it had actual speech and they didn't want to voice everything. It also removed a lot of the zoomed in views during dialog, maybe because they didn't have time to redo them in VGA.

I agree on Loom. Still, it's worth playing both versions for their differences. I played EGA first, since I got it in the LucasArts Classics collection, then I played it with the VGA and speech patch from HOTU, and it just looks better in EGA. The speech is nice, but it's not quite on par with other LucasArts talkie CD-ROMs.

I don't miss EGA at all. I think exclusively about vector monitors when longing for displays of the past.

I'm thinking of the old Flight Simulators in EGA. The clean flat shading.

I remember upgrading from CGA to EGA and being absolutely amazed at how great Space Quest 2 looked. I went back and played through all of my Sierra games again after that.

I went from monochrome to CGA and that wasn't as big a jump as from CGA to EGA.

Oh, yeah. EGA and TGA were really good for their day. ... Pretty good looking now, too, I think.
Part of the reason I think that they looked better than VGA is that when many of the VGA games were made, the programmers often used colors that were close enough to each other that they visually blended together. With both EGA and TGA they had to choose colors, that while limited, made the graphics look a bit crisper.

I love EGA and PCjr/TGA graphics. When well-implemented, as mentioned with the previous games above, it's amazing.

I always thought CD-Man looked quite good for EGA, especially in motion and some of the later levels:
