Default Genesis & SNES Game Genies for Japanese titles?

Does anyone know if the U.S. versions of the Game Genies for the Genesis and Super NES can be used as passthroughs to enable Japanese games to be played on either system? I know that the N64 Gameshark can be used to get Japanese N64 games to play on American N64s. If anyone has an idea about this, I would appreciate it. I don't particularly want to break the tabs on my Super NES if I can help it.
Currently catching up on PSN, WiiWare, Wii U E-Shop and Xbox Live Arcade exclusives I missed.

I use the Game Genie to play my Super Famicom games, but I had to cut off a small amount where the cart fits into for the different shape carts. It beats cutting up my snes, I don't have any mega drive games to test out the genesis game genie, but I imagine it should work.

Yeah, the Genesis Game Genie works wonderfully. A couple games will need codes input to get past territory lockout, but most are fine without codes.

I'd actually say it's more like half of the Mega Drive games need codes while the other half don't. And there's a pretty large percent of the ones that need codes that don't actually have them. I ran into that problem when I picked up the two Dragon Slayer titles (I should have just gotten them on the TG/PC Engine CD since one of them is in English).

I'd like to add to my previous statement, the modified game genie works as a pass through on most games on the snes, I've recently tried it on my Japanese copy of Donkey Kong Country 3, and it gave me a statement that it's illegal to copy games. Damn! Now I have to either somehow modify my snes, the game, get a super famicom, or a clone snes that plays jap snes games.

Like others have said... yes, Game Genies DO work as a pass-though on either system. Just be aware that some games (mostly newer ones) are region locked. SOME of them have Game Genie codes to get around this.

I was still eager to play DKC3, so in my haste, my gamebit wasn't working on my snes for some reason, so I got out my camp fire lighter, torched the plastic tabs on my snes (ruining the plastic flap dust cover in the process) Popped that sucker in, and whalah! It worked, so I guess the game genie causes problems in itself. My poor baby from 1994 got butchered by my hands.

All you needed was a pair of pliers. You could have just broken the tabs off. Heck, I've used a knife to take them off before.

Tried pliers, I guess I sucked at it. Oh well, what's done is done, It still looks noticeably the same to me anyways, since I always have a game inserted.

    Um, wut?

If you did it right, it should look noticeably the same with no game inserted as well. Please tell me you didn't tear off the cart slot cover or something.

I did, and at first I was mad at myself for it, but now i'm fine with it. It's not like I haven't defaced, or changed a top of a system before. I have a flip top lid cover on my fat ps2.

Yeah, see, the tabs are INSIDE the cart slot. Should have looked at the carts more carefully to see why Japanese carts won't fit into a US system (hint: it's the two notches cut into the back of American carts).

I know this, I tried opening the system first to get to it, but my gamebits wouldn't work for some reason. In order for me to burn off the tabs, I burnt the flap in the process, and then took it off. See post 7.

Yeah, sad part is, I keep getting SFC carts in trade and I'm still too chicken to snap off the tabs on any of my SNES systems. I want to make sure they're sellable if things go under. I still need to get my hands on the SNES Game Genie!

I wonder about that... I play SFC games on a Super Famicom now (and have an adapter for the few US games I have), but I have pulled the tabs out of every US SNES I've ever owned. While I don't doubt it might affect resale value, I can't imagine it would be by more than $5 or so (assuming it's not a NIB console :P ).

there is a region mod for most of the consoles genesis and snes have one if you are not afraid of opening your console and have a basic soldering skill you can make the switch yourself, in this forums are a lot of master modders that can help you or do it for you (at a price) also I am not one of them so look on the forums, if you want there are sites with lots of help and pics like gamesx and mooonkey for pal users! also saturn region mods!
