Default Does the PS3 work in your car??

Not sure if this should be under "Tech" or here, so I'm posting here. We're going on a Spring Break road trip next week and I was wondering if the PS3 can run off the power adapter/cig lighter in a car. We took our Xbox 360 in the car a couple of years ago but it required more power than the adapter provided, so it wouldn't work. Usually we roll with the original Xbox or Gamecube but I wanted to have some COD4 or Brutal Legend available, so has anyone done this?

    Thanks!

I really doubt it, the PS3 is a power hog, so if the 360 wont even play, no way the PS3 will, infact it would probally kill the car's battery, due to how much power the PS3 sucks up.

It will, but you need a big enough power inverter. I have a 1500watt inverter for my truck(18 wheeler), and it will work on that.

Hey, they don't call me the OTRGamer for nothing. Worked great until my LCD mount failed and the nice 22" Samsung became pieces on the floor. I blame Chicago road construction... lol

    Hell no it won't.

Anyway road trips are what the DS and PSP are for.

I would get at least a 750 watt inverter (you want to stay at least 10% above the maximum draw of the device). You should probably get yourself a deep cell car battery too, or tour headlights are going to dim when you turn it on

Hmm. Sounds like the old Xbox is going to work just fine.

Thanks for all your input, guys!

Why would you want to play your PS3 in your car...

That being said, I post this in memory of Zoltor.

    I'm guessing it's a temporary ban (unfortunately).

Remember too that the PS3 slim and phat use different amounts of power. The feasibility of running the slim in your car is much better.

    (Ripped off from Cnet)

    (in watts)____PS3 Slim______PS3 (60G, first gen)

    Standby______0.36________1.22
    Idling________75.19_______171.3
    BR movie_____80.90______172.79
    Game idling___95.35_______203.8
    Game playing__96.24______206.90
    YouTube_______85.08______181.28

If you're going to run it in your car, pay attention the the amperage (in addition to the wattage) rating of the inverter your going to purchase. You should be able to find the amperage rating on the bottom side of the PS3 or the manual.

Disc based systems are a bad idea for car installs, the discs tend to get scratched all to hell. It's better to mod an xbox and load the games to the hard drive.

When driving 14-16 hours in a car, having a videogame system hooked up to the cars LCD screen in the back is the only way to keep my 12 and 9 year olds happy. And if they're happy, the driver is happy.

The PS3 is so powerful that it would drive the car FOR you!

I've seen tons of 360's built into Scion Xb's so I'm sure a PS3 could be put into one as well. Just make special note of the specific power consumption mentioned by others.

No, this isn't a permanent-mount type of situation that I was asking about. I know that if I wanted it mounted in there for good it could be done. I was just seeing if anyone just plugged it into their cigarette lighter and hooked up the composite video and had success. My wife's car is an Acura MDX and we have no problems with older systems (or the Wii for that matter), but the new powerful ones don't seem to work.

Thanks again for all the input!

Install this inverter under a seat someplace, plug PS3's power cord into it, and play away. Works like a charm. If you've ever put in a car audio amplifier, the wiring is the same.

Its also very useful for other things, especially if you go camping. The one in my truck will power a small microwave even.

Also, watch the truck stops. I got mine for $129. Anything over 750 continuous is going to work fine. I've been seeing those in the $59 range.

I wouldn't trust using a system in a car - the 360 has disc scratching issues when you turn it sideways, imagine being in a bumpy road? I don't know how the PS3's disc tray would deal with that scenario.

    You've read his posts, right?

The idea of playing Brutal Legend or whatever on the road seems weird to me, but also decadent and just a little sensual. Are you using a built-in display, or are you planning on plugging a monitor in, too?
