Default Printed Magazine Help! (NEW LIST 1/4/11)

    Hey All,

Anyone have any information on the following publications?

    Need Help With...(Updated 1 / 4/ 11)

    NEW "Silicon Magazine"
I have a few sporadic issues, with three different logo designs. Their site is dead, so I'm assuming the magazine is as well. Anyone have a clue to starting and end points?

    NEW "Mega Fan"
The Game Fan spin-off, total production run?

    NEW "Ultimate Gamer"
Have two issues, one 95, one 96, production run?

    NEW "NewType Gaming"
Have a few issues, production run?

    NEW "U Plug-In"
Have two issues, seemed like a small print run.

    NEW "Player" Newsletter
This was a newsletter that seems official via Sony during the original PSX years. I have a few of them, looking to complete the set. I am very, very interested in these.

NEW "Game Players Guide to {insert system here}"
These are the most confusing. I have Nintendo Games, Genesis, Game Boy, and "Nintendo now with GameBoy" versions. Were these all separate releases? one line that changed systems every few months?

    "PlayStation Solutions US Edition"
    a. Total production run? ( I have 9 issues)
    b. Confirmed long running UK Mag, trying to figure out the span of the US version run.

    MYSTERIES UPDATED 1 / 4 / 11
    "High End"
    Third issue confirmed: I have Jan/Feb, Apr/May of 1992, and Mar/Apr of 1993.

Various sports issues updated in off-site file.

    SOLVED
    a. "Intelligent Gamer" and "Fusion" were the same magazine under a name change, which included a middle ground name of one presenting the other.

    b. "Flux's" Print run solved.

    Thanks to all in advance
    Jason

I believe that "High End" only had two issues, Apr/May 1992 and Jun/Jul 1992. It's definitely sort of "hobbyist" looking, but it was made on professional paper, so I'd say it qualifies as a magazine more than a fanzine. Compare it to HeiroGraphix Game Journal, which is more of a fanzine than a magazine, despite being able to find it in Borders.

    "GameSport" by Harris Publications

I only have the Premiere issue and #2; no clue if there were any more.

I believe there were only 7 issues.

    b. I have 1 - 10

    d. Relation to Intelligent Gamer?
As far as I know these WERE related; there issues 1-7 of Fusion, 8-10 of Intelligent Gamer's Fusion, then 1-8 of Intelligent Gamer. I'm unsure if there were any more than that though.

Hmm, bummer, this is one mag where my list is not entirely up to date... It starts with Iss. 15 (11-99) and ends with Ep. 53 (Jan 2003); that MAY be the end point, but I can't say with any certainty. I also can't recall if there really were issues 1-14, or if it mutated from another mag, or format, and 15 was the first actual mag I found in stores. *shrug*

    NEW "Mega Fan"
Again, no certainty, but I have these listed:

    Sample (w/Game Fan 4-6)
    Premier [sic] (1-1)
    Nov 97 (1-3) (Sep/Oct 97 [inside])

I would assume there was a 1-2 issue, that actually was Sep/Oct 97.

    NEW "Ultimate Gamer"
I believe there were only six, from Jul 95 to Jan 96.

    NEW "NewType Gaming"
    I have the following:

    Nov/Dec 93 (Premiere)
    Jan/Feb 94 (2)
    1-3
    1-4 (94)
    1-5 (94)
    2-2 (95)
    2-3

That might be fairly complete, though I suspect I may have another issue or two here in a "not read yet" pile/box.

    NEW "U Plug-In"
Wow, never saw this one... Pix? Extras?? :-)

    NEW "Player" Newsletter
This was a newsletter that seems official via Sony during the original PSX years. I have a few of them, looking to complete the set. I am very, very interested in these.
Pretty sure I don't have any of these, but I don't have my "corpo-zine" lists organized very well at all.

NEW "Game Players Guide to {insert system here}"
These are the most confusing. I have Nintendo Games, Genesis, Game Boy, and "Nintendo now with GameBoy" versions. Were these all separate releases? one line that changed systems every few months?
    Ugh... Both.

Game Player's Strategy Guide To Game Boy Games was separate so far as I know; I have these:

    1-1 (Sum 90)
    1-2 (Sep/Oct 90)
    1-3 (Nov/Dec 90)
    2-1 (Jan/Feb 91)
    2-2 (Mar/Apr 91)
    2-3 (May/Jun 91)

...but there was also Game Player's Encyclopedia Of Game Boy Games Volume 2 (~90), and I would assume at least a Volume 1 as well.

Game Player's: The Leading Magazine Of Video And Computer Entertainment, from the early 90s, ran from 1-1 (Apr 89) to 3-10 (Oct 91); that MIGHT be a complete list...

Now... the rest get really messed up; there were a bunch of Nintendo related titles... I have The Game Player's Guide To Nintendo 1-1 (Win 88), Game Player's Nintendo Buyer's Guide 1-1 (~88) and Game Player's Nintendo Strategy Guide 1-3 (~88) that may or may not be related to each other and the rest to come... I have Game Player's Buyer's Guide To Nintendo 2-5 (Oct/Nov 89), but it seems to fit into the run of Game Player's Nintendo Strategy Guide, which I have from 2-3 (~89) to 4-11 (Nov 91), EXCEPT 2-5 (hence why I suspect they're the same run). It then ran as Game Player's Nintendo Guide from 4-12 (Dec 91) to 6-5 (May 93).

Separately, there was Game Player's Sega Genesis Strategy Guide, which ran from 1-1 (Fall 90) to 3-4 (Aug/Sep 92), then became Game Players Sega Guide! from 3-5 (Oct/Nov 92) to 4-2 (Apr/May 93). There was also Game Player's Encyclopedia Of Sega Games, dunno if content was repeated from the mags or not, and I have Volume 5 (~93), so I assume there were at least four other volumes.

Then, they "got jiggy with it" and COMBINED the Nintendo and Sega lines into one, as Game Players Nintendo-Sega from 6-6 (Jun 93) to 6-12 (Dec 93); then Game Players Sega-Nintendo from 7-1 (Jan 94) to 7-8 (Aug 94); then Game Players Sega-Nintendo And More from 7-9 (Sep 94) to 8-5 (May 95); then Game Players from 72 (8-6) (Jun 95) to 88 (9-9) (Sep 96); then Ultra Game Players from 89 (9-10) (Oct 96) to 110 (May 98); and finally, Game Buyer (at least tenuously related) from 1 (Jul 98) [Premiere] to 4 (Oct 98) -- though there may have been a couple more issues past that which I have not logged in yet.

    Phew.

    "PlayStation Solutions US Edition"
    a. Total production run? ( I have 9 issues)
I believe that is correct, but there was also -- related, I believe --
Ultimate Solutions: PlayStation Edition, with at least 1-10 (10); dunno if there were any more after that though.

    MYSTERIES UPDATED 1 / 4 / 11
    "High End"
    Third issue confirmed: I have Jan/Feb, Apr/May of 1992, and Mar/Apr of 1993.

I've tried to find out more about NewType Gaming for a while, but there's just no leads out there. I've only got the first issue, though, so I don't have a lot to go on. I did find the blog of this guy who mentions writing for them, but I wasn't able to get in touch with him.

Issue 1-2 does exist, I have it along with the sample. It's July/August 1997.
It's funny I stumbled upon this thread because as of last night, I just databased all of my gaming mags. FINALLY!

Ugh..sorry this took so long. Been a LOOONG week.

SlapDash, the High Ends are sadly in a box under 8 boxes in a very tight corner of my game room, so I can't snap a pic of that one, trust me on it's existence though.

    UPLUGIN however, is right here:

I guess I can reveal a bit of my hand, so to speak concerning this one. I know for sure that they were around 1995 to 1996 and somewhere including 1997. They were based somewhere in Hoffman Estates, IL. They were bi-monthly color cover with black and white pages, with some actual impressive articles, including Madden Tournaments, Game Releases with Company Interviews, and the like. They even had advertisements.

I fell into them, when around 96 / 97 they came into the family game store I worked at in Oak Lawn at the time offering subscriptions and the like. I took interest in it, and sure enough I became a contributor in both art and articles. However, after the first two months, they suddenly disappeared. I recall customers asking me about it and I had no idea as I really didn't have any true contact with them.

When I realized no one was getting subscriptions, I felt guilty that I had been part of the set-up. The passion to right the wrong is what essentially got me into the fanzine business...and form Game Rave.

I was hoping that maybe *anyone* out there had heard of them...but I guess they were too small to have gotten a decent foot hold. As far as research goes:

You can see what's left of the shell of a web-site through archive.org at:
    http://web.archive.org/web/200101271...n.com/main.htm

Thanks again for the help so far, this is really a great thread ^^

    Whoa...

I did a google search for the 2 main staff members...Jeff Hodges and David Holmes....

I'm like 99% positive David Holmes is the same David Holmes...as the rapping SW Airlines Stewart.

It definitely looks "not quite pro", despite the color covers. Damn.

As to the High End issues; oh, I know about "buried"... :-(
