Default Any good websites with details on which was the best version of multi-platform games?

Last night I wanted to play some Earthworm Jim 1 and couldn't remember which version was best. I found a little bit of info on allgame.com that the Genesis version had an extra level and more audio, but they don't always have details for every game.

I know Retro Gamer magazine usually has detailed sidebars that compare and rate all the conversions of multi-platform games. Does anyone know a website that has similar information?

    Thanks!

Sega-16 used to do a feature called Side-By-Side that compared versions of some multiplatform games. There weren't very many written though.

Here's a nice thread at Pcenginefx that has a lot of graphical comparisons with screenshots of 16 bit games: http://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?topic=6609.0

If you're talking about every version, the Sega-CD & PC versions of Earthworm Jim have a lot of extra content. As for determining which version of any game is the best, you're better off looking up gameplay videos and leaving it up to your choice.

Gameplay videos or screenshots would only compare graphics and maybe audio if it was a good quality video clip. It wouldn't reveal extra levels, better control, etc. EWJ 1 happens to be a good example... probably looks best on SNES but it's not the best version to play.

I don't have the SegaCD version of EWJ (yet), but looks like that would be the best console version... I didn't even think of SegaCD and it's not listed in the 'Also available on -' section of allgame.com. They have it listed separately as Earthworm Jim:Special Edition. (And, I never play games on PC)

hardcoregaming101.net seems to be exactly what I was looking for... Thanks! Surprised that I'd never seen the site before. Looks like a LOT of great info. Most of their game 'articles' have a very detailed multi-platform comparison section. Excellent!

Here's a direct link to their index page in case anyone else is interested:

Not sure about a site, but I know EWJ is better on Genesis than SNES due to the reasons already mentioned, and Mortal Kombat is also better on Genesis. SNES version doesn't have the blood code and the fatalities are toned down (Sub-Zero does a freeze shatter instead of the Spine Rip).

Quite a few Genny versions of multi-platform games were better than the SNES. Games like Lethal Enforcers, Mortal Kombat, Aladdin, Earthworm Jim 1-2 and any other games from Virgin Interactive were better. Also, the Genny got the better Animaniacs and Tiny Toons Adventure games.

Also, there was less "butchering" in Genny ports of arcade games.

Hi there, long time lurker. Finally decided to register.

"Retrogaming Times" has a recurring series called "The Many Faces of", comparing a title's different incarnations. They will eventually implement a way to browse the articles, but it's not yet available, so Google is the best bet to quickly find them.
