Battletoads

I'm very interested in this series, although I've only snagged a copy of Battletoads/Double Dragon for Super NES. I just want to know which version is the best buy, considering I'm only going to get 30 dollars into paypal very soon. I hear this game is notoriously difficult, especially the Wind Tunnel round. Should I get the NES, SNES remake (Battlemaniacs) or the Gameboy version. I'm not sure how different each game is but since I'm low on money I want the best home version. Could anybody help me out?

The NES version was the best and I wish it replaced the SNES one as a remake of it. The Game Boy version (Battletoads in Ragnarok's World world) is a crippled port of the NES version with missing levels. The Genesis version is pretty good. You can find a cheap copy somewhere on google shop or ebay.

I'd have to disagree and go with the SNES version being the best. Pimple > Zits.

The NES version is too hard. It is eventually just not fun after the third level and just becomes nightmarish and frustrating.

BT/DD (Genesis preferred)
Battletoads in Battlemaniacs
Battletoads (Genesis)

The Genesis version is a little easier than the NES version. Especially the wind tunnel, because in the Genesis version you can move your vehicle faster. The Game Boy version is pretty awful and not worth playing. Also avoid the Game Gear and Amiga ports. Battlemaniacs is pretty much a separate game. It's okay, but the level design is bland compared to the original. Also it has this stupid issue of the finishing moves being too long and exaggerated, so that another enemy can attack you while you're finishing one off. It's very annoying and leads to some cheap hits. The SMS version doesn't have this problem, but I hear it only actually contains the first half of the game or something (I've never played it long enough to find out for sure).

I also prefer the Genesis version of Battletoads Double Dragon. Strangely enough, it's easier. I guess Rare thought Sega gamers were wimps.

The Genesis version is the best one out there. The NES version and Battlemaniacs are second then the GB (not Ragnarok's world). The GG and SMS versions suck pretty bad so avoid them at all costs, the Amiga versions should probably go that route too.

The NES version isn't as hard as you'd think, you just have to get the timing down. In the wind tunnel you have to hit up down a beat faster than the Genesis version and you'll do just fine.

I've got all the battletoads games including the arcade one. Battletoads is all about mental challenge and the NES version should therefore be on top of the list. No game can be "too hard". Here's my personal order of preference, which is almost the opposite of phreakindee's list:

1. Battletoads (NES)
2. Battletoads & Double Dragon (SNES version, OBVIOUSLY)
3. Battletoads in Battlemaniacs (SNES)
4. Battletoads Arcade
5. Battletoads (GameBoy)

The Arcade version is not really true to its roots. Its a great beat-em-up but it lacks the diversity of all the other titles. The Gameboy version of Battletoads is just shit. Ragnaroks world however, which is the port of the NES version, plays very well on the GB. Its not in the list cause its an inferior port and I'm also not mentioning the FAR inferior Genesis, Amiga and GG versions in the list for the same reason.

It's worked in MAME for a while now and isn't too bad. Agreed that it's not quite the same as the others but it sure is pretty.

You must be referring to the gameplay of the Genesis version because the Genesis graphics blow the NES graphics away pretty bad. That's not surprising, Genesis graphics toast NES graphics 99% of the time, but I thought the Genesis version played great. I won't even bother labeling these screenshots:

Thats supposed to be an obvious improvement? I dont consider it that way, the graphics arent even that great on the Genesis (I have both versions as well like I said) and gameplay wise it is indeed a little worse than the NES version. Also, the sound is HORRIBLE and the game has been made easier. Yea, I guess some people might prefer it because they can't beat the original...
