Default What do you like in Genesis games?

    1 Castlevania Bloodlines
    2. Shinobi III
    3. Mega Turrican
    4 Gunstar Heroes
    5. Hyperstone Heist
    6. Contra Hard Corps.
    7. Super Street Fighter 2
    8. Streets of Rage 2
    9. Strider's return
    10. Rocket Knight Adventures

Is my top 10, I know my topic about not getting into Genesis games states that I don't like them becase of their large sprites but I don't think this is the case mainly because I like Rocket Knight Adventures. I bought Comix Zone to see if i would like it as well and I am currently waiting for it to come in the mail. So list what you look for in Genesis games and help me out by pointing out some similarities in my top 10 so i can find some Genesis games I truely like.

growing up I hated the Genesis, the music and colors in almost every game always made me feel terrible

the only game I can really stand is Sonic 2

I'll probably use this thread to find something to try out

This thread is more supposed to help me find out what I like in Genesis games. I know the top 50 thread exists, I made this thread because I can't put into words what I like about certain Genesis games and I was hoping you people can help me find it.

Comix Zone is an amazing game, but it's also incredibly hard! You've been warned...

Since you seem to enjoy shooters/platformers, have you tried out Batman & Robin? It's a platformer that plays like a side-scrolling shooter and you can play 2-player cooperatively! It also has some of the most amazing graphics and music from the 16-bit era. In fact, it would probably put some PS1 side-scrollers to shame...it looks that good! But, it's also very difficult...at least initially.

I think that you would also like Alien Soldier...but just purchase a repro of it unless you enjoy buying $200 Genesis games.

Farting weapons are the best! Much better than lame-o gunblades.

    Well, generally speaking I like:
The tight controls. The unique ideas and diversity. The darker tone in some games. The clarity in sound compared to many SNES/NES/C64 games. The high resolution for the time. And of course the speed.

    I dislike:
The high contrast and overly saturated colors in many games. The short length of many games. The lack of action adventures / RPGs. How some games do a bad job of easing you into their mechanics (Comix Zone, Alien Soldier, most shooters). And how composers needed to make an extra effort to make the games sound good.

I would suggest to you to just play more games that people recommend (and reccomendations are not hard to find) and find out for yourself what you like about them.
You should already have a pretty good idea of what to expect from MD games from that top ten list of yours but you might want to try something more unique like Toejam & Earl, Ecco, Herzog Zwei or Bubba N Stix.

The thing that draws me into alot of genesis games, is very well done FM music.

Super Hylide for example, has a kick ass soundtrack.

As does Gaiares, and Rocket Knight Adventures.

But the other thing that really draws me in, are the graphics. They often have a soft, warm feel to them. its mostly due to dithering, etc...... but when you find a nicely done up genesis game, its better than any SNES game you will find.

Examples of that as far as I am concerned:

Lunar II, Ecco, Ristar, Ghouls and Ghosts.

    Very warm looking graphics.

It's always so bizarre to me when I read gamers who say that. It's hard for me to wrap my head around how a non-fanboy can actually feel that way about the majority of the Genesis library. Especially when they had no such complaints from NES games. BTW, I NOT saying that it's a fanboy statement -- it's just weird to me when people who aren't fanboys really feel/felt that way.

I thought that most of the music in Genesis games was fantastic.

What I have discovered I like:

    Side Scrolling
Character Selection/Multiple Characters (only reason I have Castlevania Bloodlines above Shinobi III)
    Action
And a certain thing I can't put into words that makes me enjoy these games more than Sonic or other games on the system like Blaster Master 2. this is what I am looking to explain It can't be nostalgia because I never grew up playing these games I was an SNES person I haven't played them until like the past year or so. It has to deal with the gameplay and how the game looks.

Anyone ever play a game called Mystic Defender? if so how is it? I ordered it for 14 cents lol, though the shipping was 3.99 you cant go wrong with getting a game for 4.13. It doesnt look too much like a game I would like but then again its only 4.13 .

Some of my favorite games are Shining Force I and II and Phantasy Star III and IV. Other than that, there aren't enough RPG's on the system...

I do love the Shinobi games and the nice exclusives such as Bloodlines and Rocket Knight Adventures.

Also, Streets of Rage is awesome.

Man, I love that game. It was one of my first Genesis game purchases, and the first Genesis game I ever played (after Altered Beast which was the pack-in).

It's also worth noting that Mystic Defender is the Genesis version of the Megadrive game Kujakuo 2: Geneijo, which is based on the anime/manga Kujaku Ou. It's also the sequel to the SEGA Master System game SpellCaster. In the Megadrive version of Mystic Defender, Kujaku (the player) wears his priest's robe instead of armour. There are also two domestic versions of the game. In the original version, Alexandra (who's body is enveloped by a demon at the end of the final stage) is completely naked, in the alternate censored version she's wearing a tattered dress. I'm not sure if there's a way to tell which is which without playing through the entire game, which is extremely short, even by retro game standards.

If you like RPGs the best ones on the system are:

Phantasy Star II-IV (III is the red-headed step-child)
    Shining in the Darkness
    Landstalker (ARPG)
Shining Force I & II (SRPG)
    Shadowrun (ARPG)
D&D Warriors of the Eternal Sun
    Might & Magic
    Master of Monsters (SRPG)
    Crusader of Centy (ARPG)
    Beyond Oasis (ARPG)

Strider Returns is absolute balls. I regret ever owning that game...

Have you ever played Ranger-X? It's kinda short, but it's a pretty wild action/shooter with some pretty inventive levels. Look it up sometime!

I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that they like Strider Returns before now.
