    Cool New Asteroids World Record!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqcoY7rk88Q
John McAllister set the world record for Asteroids, beating out the 28-year-old world record from 1982 by over 2,000 points. He played for 52 hours straight!

Any one care to share high scores they are particularly proud of?

I'm just impressed someone can maintain that level of focus for that many hours without sleeping. But as the news reporter suggests, I guess if you get enough practice in, the focus required is diminished accordingly.

I haven't read on this particular attempt yet, but I know in the past Asteroids players are able to build up enough extra ships to give themselves 10 minute breaks in the middle of play. I don't know if that's long enough for a nap but at least you could empty your space bladder!

I can barely cough up 26k, so this was pretty impressive.

I just personally wish this guy would of kept going. I never understood breaking the record, and then just stopping. He should of just kept going until he couldn't take it anymore. The fact that the person just up, and quit shows vulnerability in the record. I expect this record to be broken a lot sooner than 28 years the next time around.

Well, he did play for 52 hours straight....that's a pretty long time.

Ya but he beat it by only 2000 points. I think what megamaniaman is getting to is someone else will will think "oh hmm... I bet that would be easy to beat!" then that person could beat the first record by just a few points and possibly start an asteroid record war with all the hype x3 However if he played for just one more hour he could have beat it by a more intimidating number that competition would shy away from.

I watched the livestream of him breaking the record, he was saying at the end that his hands were swollen and he couldn't keep it up much more. I know his original intention was to keep going, but obviously he changed his tune after getting the record.

Anyone have detailed info on this particular revision he broke the record on? I heard it's a speed-up hack. My Asteroids machine has Brazes high score save kit that uses a REV 2 vector chip. How is this version different than the WR holders machine? Can anyone here answer this or familiar with different revisions? It's my understanding that the WR machine is easier to play.

What was probably going on his head around hour 52:

"OK, only about 1000 points left to go... ooh, I feel like I could just pass out... hands are killing me... oh, so close! Just this one small UFO... GOT IT!! FINALLY!! i can finally sleep!"

Try and do anything--anything, for 52 hours straight. I guarantee you that is 90% of the battle in any kind of record like this.

These world records are 25% skill/memorization, 75% endurance. Once you get the game down where it starts looping, it's just a matter of lasting long enough to accrue points.

I would have thought Asteroids would be considerably more random (and thus less prone to looping) than other games.

I dont know many people that can stay awake for over 2 days without a little *help*.

I dont think i could play a game for 52 hours straight, the closest I ever got was GTA: San Andreas, we played that for 3 days straight, but there was 3 people an we traded off.
