Default 3do not working - disc spinning in both directions? wtf

Ok, so I picked up a 3DO model FZ-10 from the flea market this weekend and when I put a disc in, it starts to spin it up and the laser starts moving around, but the game never gets loaded.

The weird thing is that the disc spins in one direction for ~3 seconds, stops, and then starts spinning in the other direction for ~3 secs. It does this a few times and then stops completely. (the disc looks like its spinning in 1x mode)

OK I KNOW this is obvious but by disc you mean a clean good condition original retail disc right? I ask because that type of behavior can happen with a bad burn or as they say "backup".

Yep, I tried a good clean real disc as well as a real audio CD and got the same results.
