Default What games absolutely need the N64 expansion pack?

When it comes to the 4MB Expansion Pack for the Nintendo 64, I've heard alot of conflicting reports about which games absolutely need the pack, and which games look better with it, and which games actually look better if you don't use it, and all kinds of stuff like that.

So I thought maybe some of you guys could help me out. Which games on the N64 won't play whatsoever, if you don't have an expansion pack?

Which games will play to some degree without an expansion pack?

Which games use the expansion pack, but you're actually better off, not activating the High Res mode?

Thanks for any help on this, it's rather confusing to me.

Perfect Dark only allows you to play arena deathmatch if you don't have the expansion pack. The entire one-player story mode (i.e., the bulk of the game) requires the pack.

See, there you have it. For some reason, I got the impression that it was the exact opposite. I thought that some guy at GameStop told me that you only need the expansion pack with Perfect Dark if you are going to play mulitlplayer, but the single player game will work fine without it. Turns out that it is actually the exact opposite.

Also you can use the Expansion pak with Turok II:Seeds of Evil(the first N64 game to use the Expansion pak),Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine,Castlevania Legacy of Darkness, just to name a few to enhance the graphics. Also you have to have the Expansion pak to play The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask.

And Star Wars: Rogue Squadron also used the expansion pack if you have it.

Yes indeed, Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine was only available through Blockbusters and on some website, but you can still find it regularly on Ebay and maybe even at some Blockbusters.

It's a lot like Tomb Raider... it was supposed to be the second coming of games, but the PC version didn't do so well and the PSX version was cancelled. It's acyually a very good game, and the graphics are sweet. Only console port available.

Ah, that is why I never heard of it. That means I haven't got a chance of getting it. Darn.

I know The World Is Not Enough uses the expansion pack too, as an optional setting for higher res.

There's one on Ebay right now with a starting bid of $10, and a Buy It Now of $20.

StarCraft 64 uses the expansion pack, but you can play without it. Ditto on Tony Hawk 3.

Star Wars Racer, Star Wars Battle for Naboo also benefit from the expansion pak. I think SF Rush 2049 and Hydro Thunder do as well.

And didn't Conkers BFD require it?

    Cheers,
