Default A little bit of DP nostalgia

I was cutting out some ads from some old vid mags today, and I saw an article in the Sept. '93 issue of Video Games & Computer Entertainment called Fandango. Anyway, there was a spot on the DP newsletter. It says that "By the time you read this, Santulli should be finished with the 12th issue of Digital Press, one of the finest publications in all of fandom." Well, I just got issue #48 in the mail a few days ago! What gives? Either that Santulli is one hell of a fast writer, or something is seriously wrong here.
    Yeah, that's right... WORD!

Somebody once told me to get a life.

I told them I sold it for money to buy video games.

    Hahaha!

All this confusion? It's easy. We've been around for 11 years. He's reading an old magazine that was talking about Digital Press' latest issue which was at the time #12 (we're on #49 now).

I've kept all of those issues where we were featured in "pro" magazines. Did you know that in 1993 we were named "Fanzine of the Year" by Video Games & Computer Entertainment Magazine? Yep, we rock.

I was running through some early issues of "Superplay" (UK SNES magazine) and noticed a couple of mentions for DP in there...

I've read that exact same issue of VG&CG, and it is indeed kinda weird to see a mention from way back when about DP. I also read in that same magazine (but different issue) about the first DP Guide, which had the inconvenience of Joe forgetting to announce the price for the guide! :P

The OP was trying to be clever and it clearly missed. "If you have to explain a joke, it's not a good joke"

Yeah good riddance to gaming mags and paper media in general. When you realize that 99% of it gets thrown in the trash and you look around at all the forests they are cutting down, you realize how idiotic it all is, when digital media is a thing now. I hope all the Better Homes and Garden magazines and Car and Driver mags cease to exist in the next few years.

They aren't cutting down forests for paper production anymore, trees are grown on tree farms specifically for use in paper production. If there's less demand for printed paper then less new trees get planted. It's like how Christmas trees are specifically grown in tree lots every year.

If anything insisting on recycling old paper for new paper production can be worse for the environment, it takes more energy and resources to produce new paper from old paper than just making new paper from completely new material.

    I made two claims.

As for the first with trees being planted specifically to meet demand; that's partly by Patrick Moore who was a founder of Greenpeace. He briefly spoke about this on an episode of Penn and Teller's BS. I watched these episodes years ago but here's a clip.

Trees are grown sustainably on tree farms. The terms "tree farms" and "managed forests" are used somewhat interchangeably depending on the source describing them.

Christmas trees are grown on tree farms.

As for the second claim about using more energy, that was also from another episode of Penn and Teller's BS.

    Here's a clip.

    Full episode on recycling.

Otherwise here are some articles. First one describes how greenhouse gas emissions would increase if we recycled more paper, based on current energy sources used in production and recycling.

We have Christmas tree farms where I live. thats something i always felt was wasteful. like, just buy a fake tree once and then re-use it for the next 30 X-mas's, like my mom does

It's certainly more convenient to use an artificial tree, much cleaner and no need to water it, and no fire hazard like a dried out tree can end up. If anything I expect the real trees to still be better for the environment, the land is used for growing trees instead of other industrial uses, and the trees clean the air while they're being grown. Artificial trees are manufactured so they use energy and resources while being made, as well as packaging and being delivered to stores. Plus when they eventually wear out they can only be thrown away into a landfill while real trees can be composted. Real trees would have a lower carbon footprint.

The lots for growing trees are used for business purposes, they aren't just natural public lands. They would be developed or used for other industrialized purposes if demand for the trees disappeared.
