    Exclamation Need help: mame stutters/freezes

Looking for some guidance... Hopefully someone else has experienced this and can point me in the right direction....

I have a mame cab running on windows vista.... Latest version of mame with updated rom sets.

Classic games run perfect for the most part... Issue is with fighting games such as MK2 or MVC where multiple buttons are being pressed simultaneously very quickly... Occasionally this causes the music to slow/stutter and the game will freeze and go into some sort of infinite loop.... Resulting in a reboot to fix. I tried everything.... Sticky keys, various settings in mame, ensured it was the only program running, etc.... It still happens.... The PC is pretty new so I dont believe it's a HW issue....

Has anyone seen this? Or know of anything i can try?

    Thanks for reading... Appreciate it.

The first thing I would do is try some older MAME versions and see if it reproduces the problem. The goal of MAME is to accurately emulate hardware as opposed to "game experience" so a lot of times games will run worse in a new MAME version.

Is it only when you press keys simultaneously? Do you have a game pad or joystick?

There are some games that the CPU can't handle, its either that or with the later games, say 2004 and later, that the stuttering and slowness is a form of "copy protection". There are some that refuse to run at all, mostly japanese games.

I had this with Tekken until I upgraded my graphics card to a better card with new features.

    Great advice. Thank you.

It only appears to happen when pressing a lot of buttons during a more graphically intensive game.

Will try another version of mame then look to pick up a cheaper video card... Hope that works.
