The underwhelming response to this thread should answer your questions. lol.
I just picked it up over the weekend. Back when FFXI was taking off, I really liked it. The near absence of soloing just made it impossible for me to play. I worked an unpredictable schedule, so I couldn't static (run with the same crowd every time I play.). So I'd have to find a new party every time I had a chance to play. I remember "seeking party" outside the Crawlers Nest for up to ten hours on a Saturday before I'd just turn it off.
Based on the plans I had read before FFXIV came out, that wasn't going to be a problem this time around. So I waited until I thought I'd have a little time to play & I finally picked it up over the weekend. It gets terrible reviews but I liked XI enough to at least try it. We'll see how it goes from here. So far, after only an hour or two of play, my initial reaction to the UI is that it's inconvenient and non-intuitive. Here's to hoping for a patch that replaces it.

I think I remember one reviewer saying that 2 of the big time problems were that the menus are extremely tedious to navigate and you end up grinding against the same monsters over and over, even after you gain a significant amount of levels.
My Systems: Atari 2600, 7800 Intellivision Nes(top loader) Snes Virtual Boy N64 Gamecube Wii GBC GBA(original) DS(brick) Genesis Dreamcast Ps2 Ps3 PSP(phat) PSP 3000, LYNX
FFXI really was a lot of fun. Just too hard & I didn't have time for such a commitment.

We have a retail copy sitting here, waiting for when it's actually playable, just so Achi can get the preorder bonus item when she starts. I could care less, of course.
We played open beta and the game was horrendous. The menus and crafting/harvesting interface destroy the game completely. SE needed to learn that making the game for the PS3 first would alienate any players on the PC. They didn't.
The game needed another year in development. By trying to beat WoW:Cataclysm to the punch, they shot themselves in the foot. While no one is expecting FFXIV to be WoW meets FF, to ignore the learnings of the most successful MMORPG of all time is insanity.
We won't be touching the game for easily a year. I played FFXI for 3 years, Achi played for 6 and she has almost 400 days into her main character. We wanted to like the game, desperately but my god, it is total shit.
Am I the only person here playing this??

Well it looks like Naoki Yoshida taking over is already paying off.
New auto-attack combat video:

Yoshida also clarifies that work on the first raid zone is completed, and a second will follow suit.
Guildleve Reform Announcement:
http://alvoles.com/2011/06/30/guildleve-reform/
Up until now, guildleves have been positioned as the heart of gameplay in FINAL FANTASY XIV. Going forward, however, guildleves will be reborn as solo-oriented content that can be enjoyed with minimal time and fuss.
Not bad at all for only 6 months into the reforming of the game! At this rate it is going to be REALLY good within another 6 months. Revamping an entire MMO within a years time seems pretty commendable and it seems like they are going to get it done. No doubt at this rate I will be playing.

Made a new character last week and I'm finally enjoying it, now that I got vsync forced on and a smooth framerate. Behests are fun...
From what I can gather, still a shitfeast. Ask again in 6 months.
There's an interesting site that uses the available character data from Lodestone and aggregates it in readable format. At my current rate, I'll be level 50 in 3 months, if I keep my my current rate of 0.199 SP per second. It also tracks quests, aetherite gates visited, and all sorts of stuff that makes it a nice little checklist to see where your character is in terms of progression through the game.
I'm at the point where a linkshell would be really beneficial. I joined one last night called Pirates of Eorzea and they seem like a fun bunch, I did some Thanalan region behests and gained a few levels with them.
