Picked up one of these loose on a whim and can get two more if I want. What are they used for and are they worth anything?

They're mostly needed to play Shining Force CD, to access book 3 you need to finish book 1 and 2 only there's not enough room on the Sega CD's built in memory to save everything.
They're worth at least $20-$30 if loose.
I think you can use it to save for any games that use saves, while only some games support directly saving to the cart you can transfer any saves between the console and the backup cart. You won't have to delete your saves if your internal memory gets full, I'm pretty sure the cart has 16 times the storage space as the internal memory. It would also be useful if you wanted to transfer saves to another system.
I'm not sure if there's any other game that requires the cart to fully play through, I don't actually have one myself and I don't have many Sega CD games. Possibly Third World War and Eye of the Beholder would benefit from it, I've heard that each of these two games take up the entire internal memory by themselves. Maybe the Lunar games too, I'm not sure how much memory they take up but I've also heard that they take up a lot. If you wanted to save anything else or have multiple saves you would need the backup cart.
The Lunar games, if I recall correctly, can only save 3 games to the internal memory.
Btw, I'd be quite interested if you could get another one, wingzrow. I'd pay about $25 shipped or so for it.

Wanted: Any and all Dragon Quest, Lufia/Estpolis, Tales of series, and NIS games, strategy guides, and miscellaneous items. Will pay $$$ or trade well for items I don't already have.
I did end up buying them ( $10.00 for all three ). I'm going to have to pass on the $25.00 offer though. The only BINS I see on ebay right now are asking $40+ so even with the fees I would get something like $10.00 more. Ile let you know if they don't sell though. God knows most stuff doesn't sell for what you ask for it.
Cheapest one on ebay is a loose one for $24.99 with no bids. No label, but otherwise fine.

And here's a completed auction;

You might get $40 if it was complete, I doubt you'll get that much for a loose one.
Yeah I'd say $20-30 tops. $30 is on the high side for a loose one. I paid $20 for my complete one a few years back, and that was when Sega CD stuff had higher demand.

Plus, this is a private forum without the headaches of ebay. After Ebay fees and paypal fees, you end up losing 20-25% of your profit. I would rather sell a $40 game(ebay price) on DP for $30 and forget about the headaches. No sense of squeezing every penny unless you are on ebay. Nice find though....you still should make a pretty penny!
