Series creator Michael Latham was hard at work on the first EC Saturn game when it was cancelled by Sega of Japan. The Japanese division of the company wanted to focus on only one fighting franchise, Eternal Champions was cancelled in favor of the Virtua Fighter series.

This is a bit old, however rather timely. It seems a user on Sega-16 is working on a fangame of the original using design information from Latham himself. Very interesting stuff! Read some of the posts in this thread here.
