    Default Good CRTs?

What's a good CRT monitor to invest in? I had a Veiwsonic PF790 but I used Windex on in and ruined it... so it's time to get a new one.

At this point you ought to go with whatever you can find. I don't think there's much of a selection in stores anymore, and I can't imagine a CRT that would be worth the astronomical shipping fees.

How is your monitor ruined, anyway? I was not aware Windex could do that to a CRT.

Windex messes up the antiglare coating.

To answer the OP's question, look on your local Craigslist. If you can find a Sony Trinitron monitor that meets your size/price requirements, check it out. You may not have much choice and just have to pick up whatever though.

Have you guys ever tried hooking up your classic PC setups to the later big-screen HD/ED CRT sets? I've been toying around with the idea, but I don't know if it would work.

I suggest Craigslist as well. Right now everyone is unloading CRTs for cheap from Christmas deals on flat screens. It will continue to be this way for another year or two before they become increasingly difficult to find. I see them around thrift stores all the time, but not around the pawn shops. I spot good sized CRTs on the side of the road often on trash days and of the few I've picked up they work fine.

As for what to look for, I have hooked my Commodore-64 and Atari 800 up to my 32" Sony Trinitron and man are they sharp. Everyone I've known always point towards the flat Trinitron screens as the best and I agree. Some previous CRT monitors I've used on a daily basis have been Gateway, Dell, HP, Packard Bell, IBM, and Intergraph, but I wouldn't doubt there existing something better.

How classic are we saying? Something of the 80's, 90's or 00's? Yes, computers have come a good way in this last decade.

I just figured that I'd chime in here and say that hooking up an old PC to a flat screen monitor works great. I've hooked up my Windows 3.1 386 to my current HP2009m widescreen HD monitor and the picture was razor sharp and clear. The only downside is that the PC stretches the games to fit the screen but it doesn't affect the resolution much and the PC displays the screen in its native resolution and I never saw any lost picture quality because of that.

While we're asking this, what's the proper way to clean a CRT?

You would probably use one of the many widely-available monitor cleaning solutions.

I've cleaned my Sony 17" Trinitron CRT a million times with Windex and other glass cleaners. They've never harmed it in any way.

I actually have a 27" Sharp CRT that I am throwing in the garbage tomorrow. Thing still looks and works like brand new just have no need for it and it is just taking up space. Wish I knew somebody who would use it.

I'd recommend freecycle.org if you are just going to trash it. Let someone else get some use from it. Also a good place to look for CRTs.

If the anti-glare coating is messed up, just strip it off with acetone. Problem solved. Just avoid getting it on the plastic bezel.
