    Default GameCube capable of 3D?

Iwata: To go back a little further, the Nintendo GameCube system actually had 3D-compatible circuitry built in.

    Itoi: Huh?

Iwata: It had the potential for such functions.

Itoi: Nintendo GameCube did? And all the Nintendo GameCubes systems around the world?

Iwata: Yeah. If you fit it with a certain accessory, it could display 3D images.

    Itoi: What a secret!

Iwata: Nintendo GameCube was released in 2001, exactly ten years ago. We’d been thinking about 3D for a long time even back then.

Itoi: Why didn’t anyone ever know?

Iwata: The liquid crystal for it was still expensive. Simply put, Nintendo GameCube could display 3D images if you attached a special LCD, but that special liquid crystal was really expensive back then.

Itoi: Yeah, we’re talking about ten years ago.

Iwata: We couldn’t have done it without selling it for a price far above that of the Nintendo GameCube system, itself! We already had a game for it, though—Luigi’s Mansion, simultaneously released with Nintendo GameCube.
This is from a recent 'Iwata Asks' interview. So since the circuitry is already built into the GC, would it technically be possible to mod it so could output 3D on a 3D screen? I could certainly see someone from the modding community trying this.

Although I guess if it is, it might be pointless due to a lack of 3D games?

I don't understand this. I thought most games for the Gamecube were 3D.

Unless we're talking about "holographic projector" 3D and not "free-roaming environment" 3D.

So, the obvious question is: Did it get carried over into Wii? Maybe it's not 100% Gamecube BC after all. *shrug* Would be interesting to know though.

Nah, they have to talking about steroscopic 3D support. It's fairly easy to do actually. But like they say, most LCD TV's at the time couldn't support it(the refresh rate was too low) and those that did, they were crazy expensive.

Also, the idea of a "holographic projector" is pure Sci-Fi. Holograms are not projections.

I believe in the GC Test disc there were some hidden Stereoscopic images. I know I saw something about it a long time ago.

Yeah I meant the the kinda 3D we see in nearly every film these days, and soon games (I imagine).

Huh. Sounds like Nintendo really didn't have that big of a blank area in 3DV (3D video) development between the Virtual Boy and the 3DS. Might have to do some research into this for The Cutting Room Floor...

Right now, I'm prepping some updates to the page for the Sonic 2 Nick Arcade proto, along with diving through some PC Engine games for lost material. Do you do anything there, or just browsing?

Just browsing. I do my own prototype site for classic Atari systems (www.atariprotos.com) which is very similar in some ways.
