Default Obélix for the Atari 2600

The rarity guide says about $75 for a loose copy but I'm not sure how long ago that has been updated. I tried to look on ebay to get a better idea of the current value but I didn't see any copies on there.

I'm assuming this is the NTSC version since there is no "P" on the label indicating it's PAL format.

Here's a blurry picture of the cart:

Judging by the condition of your cart, which appears to be very good, I would imagine that you have an $80-$100 cart assuming that it is indeed NTSC. Obelix used to be all over the place pricewise, but has now settled around the $75 mark for an NTSC cart with label wear from Mexico. I would find out for certain that it is NTSC and would then entertain offers over at Atariage. It's an excellent find, even if it does turn out being PAL.

Thanks I just wanted to see if it was still going for around the same value. Is there any other way to make sure it's NTSC besides looking at the label?

I'm not a member of Atariage though and I wouldn't sign up just to sell something. I'll probably see if anyone here is interested in it or put it on ebay.

Obelix was a PAL only release. Asterix had an NTSC release though.

I think you have that backwards. Asterix is PAL only (released in the states as Taz). As for Obelix, mobygames has this to say:

"Obelix was mostly sold in Europe in PAL format, but a limited NTSC run was actually released in North America, probably only in Quebec where the large French-Canadian population would have been familiar with the character. The NTSC version is extremely rare."

You're right, I got them mixed up. I got confused on the release after reading Hardcore Gaming 101's review of all the Asterix games and they mentioned Obelix being a PAL only release.

Asterix was produced in NTSC form. Very few carts have surfaced considering it's an Atari game, and most complete copies came from the developer.

So did Obelix also get an NTSC release or was it PAL only like I had originally thought?

I have a few friends at atariage.com that helped me to get information because i have sold CIB NTSC Obelix and Asterix, both are very real and NTSC confirmed.

The Obelix cart sometimes are sold in 70 usd .... and 100 boxed.

The asterix carts i have sold have reached 150 to 200 usd because i am in Mexico and not many trust mexican sellers, but i sold them a bit higher when people from atariage.com spread the word that i was not a scammer.

Nice find, and beautiful cart condition! I would love to add that to my 2600 collection if I wasn't always broke, haha.

Never knew how confusing some of these releases could be when they have super limited runs in some regions.

YEah !!, it wasn't too long ago that we still believed that there were no NTSC release until Steve Woita unveiled a few sealed NTSC copies

Yeah, IIRC Steve actually had a carton of NIB sealed copies in storage somewhere that was given to him by Atari that he had put away and forgotten about. That proved to be the provenance needed to confirm that Asterix did indeed exist in NTSC format.
