Maximize the experience? Buy a copy of Sin & Punishment off Ebay (loose ones are cheap), get a joint from the stoner dude down the street, borrow a few of the wife's Xanax, and a six pack/bottle of your favorite poison. Maximization guaranteed, or at least a good nap.

For ports, Resident Evil 2, Mega Man 64, Nightmare Creatures, and Forsaken 64 are the best and worth owning.

That's really the best the N64 has. Most of what else you get isn't going to be that great.

How is it the BEST game on the N64 (the one that me, a guy who hates the console, absolutely loves) is only mentioned once in this thread? Of course I'm talking about PAPER MARIO! Get this before you get garbage like RE2 (an ugly ugly port) or either of the lousy Castlevanias.

To each his own, but most of this list is comprised of games I'd stay away from. Nightmare Creatures is a giant turd IMO.

Again, it's hard to go wrong with first party (Nintendo - Mario, Starfox, Zelda) or second party (Rare - Banjo, DK, Goldeneye/PD, Conker) games.

Hunt down a copy of Goemon's Great Adventure like somebody else posted. It is a great platformer that progressively but smoothly gets more difficult. Last castle is a bitch.

I personally like the 3 games by Treasure best.

As luck would have it, the new issue of Retrogamer (#87) has a large feature on collecting for the N64. You may want to check it out.

    Some uncommon choices:

Winback: Covert Operations- Modern 3rd Person Action Adventure. It's really cheap used and there aren't many similar games on the system.

Madden 2002: Last version of Madden on the system runs in high resolution and a great frame rate. Can also be had for a few bucks

The World Is Not Enough: Looks and sounds incredible and the single player experience beats both Goldeneye and Perfect Dark.

Indiana Jones Infernal Machine: This got trashed by a lot of people when it came out but I had never played Tomb Raider so it was a completely new experience for me.

I Played Indy long after I had played through Tomb Raider. It was still a blast. The only thing that hurt Indy were the bugs (like occasional game freezes). Other than that, it was a fantastic game. I remember being surprised by how much speech there was in the game.

Awesome responses and some suggestions I never would have thought of! Good stuff, much appreciated people! I am having a blast with it so far! A very nice fellow on youtube recently shipped 6 titles to me! He sent POKEMON STADIUM as a joke mostly (I just never got into POKEMON) but also Mario Kart64 / Star wars Ep 1 Racer / GoldenEye 007 / Starfox 64 / Star Wars Shadows of the Empire /

All in all I think that is a pretty sweet start!

Oh I definitely want Resident Evil 2 I love Survival Horror.

Plenty of great suggestions in here, and I've played a great portion of them. Obviously 1st party Nintendo stuff will always get some love, but I'll add a recommendation for Banjo-Kazooie as well. Quite possibly a better 3D platformer than Mario 64, with better controls and more humor. Definitely worth checking out.

Here's my Top 50 and Bottom 25 Nintendo 64 games list:

    Hope that helps!

And I totally agree about Goemon's Great Adventure and Mischief Makers. They're both excellent, fun, classic style games.

Is there anyway I can get a copy of this in the states? Possibly even a subscription? Do larger magazine stands/stores sell Retrogamer in the states? I NEED to read this article and then frame the magazine and put it on my wall. I love all things N64.

Some of the bigger chains around here (Borders, Barnes and Noble) sold Retrogamer last time I've visited. May vary on the area (I'm on the west coast) but it's worth snooping around those stores.
And don't bring up that stupid girlie Aladdin rip off! Shantea?

Honestly, Pikachu VRS is fun, IMO.

I have a big N64 hardcopy collection, but I only really play in emulation. 1600x1200 in 60fps is too good to ignore.

Most Barnes & Noble Bookstores should sell it.

Just to simmer down the Ogre Battle 64 hype a bit I've got to chime in and mention I found the game terribly slow and boring. It is the only Ogre Battle game I've played, but being a fan of strategy games of it's sort (played through a few Shining Force games, Dragon Force, and Saiyuki Journey West) I did give Ogre Battle 64 a fair chance, having played for more than 14 hours before deciding I had more engaging games to play.

I'm also one of those people who thought Zelda Ocarina of Time was awesome, but ultimately boring. Somewhere mid-way through the game I purchased Panzer Dragoon Saga and never returned to Ocarina of Time, I sure never missed it. The next Zelda game I tried was Twilight Princess and that didn't hold my interest either.

Anyhow, some of the favorites from my collection:
    Aerofighters Assault
    Asteroids Hyper 64
    Bangaioh
    Battle Tanx: Global Assault
    Beetle Adventure Racing
    Blast Corp
    Bomberman Hero
    Bomberman 64 (JPN version)
    Choro Q 64 2
    Dezaemon 3D Shooting Game Editor
    Diddy Kong Racing
    Excitebike 64
    F-Zero X
    Geomon's Great Adventure
    Hot Wheels Turbo Racing
    Kirby 64 The Crystal Shards
    Lego Racers
    Mario Kart 64
    Mario Tennis
    Midway's Greatest Arcade Hits
    Mischief Makers
    Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness
    Paper Mario
    Puyo Puyo Sun 64
    Ridge Racer 64
    Rocket: Robot on Wheels
    Scooby Doo Classic Creep Capers
    Sin & Punishment
    Snowboard Kids 1 and 2
    Starcraft 64
    Star Fox 64
    Star Soldier Vanishing Earth
    Super Mario 64 rumble version
    Wave Race 64 rumble version
