Sega Genesis cartridge slot

I recently got myself another Sega Genesis model 2. This one came with a sony chip so I can mod it. The only problem is that the system does not work. When I originally got it the cartridge slot was really dirty. It had pencil shavings shoved down it somehow. I was able to get them out by blowing through a straw, and vacuuming them out. The only problem is that the cartridge slot still doesn't work! When I turn it on, I get perfect audio, but the picture is completely garbled and screwed up.

I noticed this Sega Genesis is a little different from my other ones.

My working Sega Genesis model 2, Sega Genesis model 1, and JVC X eye all have cartridge slots that look like this:

Please somebody help me out! I really want to see this thing work.

Perfect audio? Is the game playing but the picture on screen isn't good? If so, that isn't the cartridge slot.

Yep. The sound still plays fine but the picture is screwed up like a glitched up NES game. Can you tell me something I can do to fix the cartridge slot?

I just tried taking a shitty sports game, rubbing lots of rubbing alochol on it, and taking it in and out of the cartridge slot, and that didn't help.

If the game plays blindly, that is with audio but improper video, it's not the cartridge slot. It's a problem in the video signal chain, like the VDP, RGB converter, or something related.

The cartridge just serves data, it doesn't serve seperated graphics & sound. If the game is booting then the system is reading the cartridge.

Sorry I misread your post. Well now what can I do? I really have no idea besides getting another console, but I'd rather not do that.

I would at least check for proper +5V at the VDP and inspect the board for shorts, cuts, or other damage. I have more Genesis units than I know what to do with so I haven't spent much time attempting component-level repair on them, so someone else might have some specific experience with this. I'd be curious to see a screenshot as there is a slim chance it could offer insight.

use a stanley blade to get rid of the dirt.
i have done this on snes md master system any cart based system.
