Default Famicom carts used for Famicom repro's.

Was wondering if anybody has a list of common Famicom games that can be used as donor carts for Famicom repro's. I'm wanting to get the Japanese Super Mario 2 put on cart but can't find any info on what Famicom game could be used as a donor.

Wait a minute, let me make sure I know what you're asking.

You mean to ask what original Famicom games can be opened up, have the CHR and PNG chips removed and replaced with new ones and walk away with a copy of Super Mario Bros. 2 (the REAL SMB2) on that Famicom cart?

Well, a couple things. Right away, SMB2J was only ever released on the Famicom Disk System, never on cartridge. There are pirates that are on cartridge, but they run off their own mappers and can't be reproduced.

That said, there are plenty of NES reproductions of SMB2J. How? A really really smart programmer by the name of Loopy essentially reprogrammed the entire game to run on the standard MMC3 format.

Therefore, any MMC3 Famicom game should be a good candidate for a reproduction of SMB2J.

For a full list of MMC3 games, do a command+f or ctrl+f search for MMC3 here:

I believe many Famicom carts are no good, because when you go to open them, they break apart.

You have to do it carefully. They're held together with clamps, not screws. If the clamps break, then it's impossible to work with.

Thanks for the info Satoshi_Matrix. I know that SMB2 was a FDS game, I've been looking into getting a repro of it on cart but since I only have a Famicom it's quite difficult to find people who can do repros on Famicom carts. Knowing that I need an MMC3 game helps out a lot though since the guy who I asked about making the cart just needed that info.

Well damn seems that I can't use just any MMC3 Famicom cart for this. Here's the response I got back about the copy of Famicom Robocop I was going to use as a donor - "It's not going to work. ROBOCOP is MMC3, but it's missing the WRAM chip. It's a TLROM board, but this game needs TKROM." So does anybody have an idea of what cheap Famicom game would meet the requirement of being an MMC3 with a WRAM chip and a TKROM board?

Check the NES Cart Database for the proper Famicom boards.

That's a question best left to nintendo age. I only know so much, without opening up all my Famicom games.

I'll go sign up on Nintendo Age and try asking over there. Thanks a bunch for your help though.

I realize that this reply is practically two years late, but I would recommend the following Famicom games for a repro SMB2J cart -

    SMB-USA
    SMB3
    North & South
    Happy Birthday Bugs
    Mickey Mouse 3
    Great Battle Cyber

North & South, Mickey Mouse 3. Sure if you don't mind destroying a possibly valuable game (I know N&S is sort of a cult game, and with how Kid Klown is rapidly rising in price, I expect Mickey will too).
Unsure how common Bugs is, Great Battle doesn't seem expensive, but I don't imagine it being too common as a late-era license game.

Ended up using a copy of Wizardry 2: Legacy of Llylgamyn. Never did find anybody to make a replacement cart label though, still have the Wizardry label on it.
