Default Will the ps2 controller work on a ps1?

I've just ordered a ps1 because I'm none too fond of software emulation (I know that's just a weird quirk and 99% of games work fine on the ps2), but I wanted a real ps1 darn it. So now I'm wondering what to do about controllers.

If the ps2 controller would work that would make life simpler and I've heard from different sources you both can and can't so I'm coming here looking for a more definitive answer. Also does anybody know if this would cause some unforeseen issues becuase I know the poll rates are different (250hz on a ps1, 500hz on a ps2). Or would I be better off tracking down an original?

Ya, Im pretty sure you can. The only problem you may have is analog sticks. I don't think those work with ps1 games so you need to turn them off.

Most of the games that were released after the dual shock controller will work with the analog sticks.

And if your system comes and you controller doesn't work, it's not too hard to track down PSX dual shocks. Most any store that sells old games should have them.
I only need 2 more NES games (US)!

Wireless Playstation 2 controllers don't work. I've tried my Logitech and Force 2 gamepads on my PSOne with no luck.

So if they work, it's just the wired variety.

I can't get some third-party PS1 accessories to work properly on a PS2. My Konami gun clone won't work, but any old Guncon clone does.

But anyway. If it's official Sony, it'll work.

The Force 2 wireless controller is officially licensed and doesn't work.

Hmmm...my Logitech Cordless Action wireless controller works fine on my fat PS1, I use it all the time.

PS2 controllers function identically to PS1 dual shocks when used on a PS1, so games that don't support analog will not enable analog functionality on the controller and should still work fine.

Also to the original OP, technically I don't believe there's emulation involved in the PS2's ability to play PS1 games, as I believe that the major components of the PS1 are in the PS2 in hardware form.

There are at least a handful of PS1 games that do not play properly on the PS2.
Typically speed issues where the game will play slower on a PS2.

    I said "official", not licensed.

When the Sony branding is plastered all across the controller and packaging, I consider it official. It's basically the official wireless controller for the system through Sony's endorsement of it. Not that it matters either way, just explaining my thinking.

I'll have to try my Logitech again and see if I did check it on my PSOne (I thought I did when I tried the Force 2 controller). But I'm quite certain that I've tried the Force 2 on the redesigned PSOne and didn't have any luck. So don't buy one of those PS2 controllers expecting to be able to use it on your PSOne.
