Have you tried running it on a Virtual Machine (would suggest either Virtualbox or VMware since this game uses graphical acceleration, but Virtual PC 2007 may work)?

This... really doesn't make any sense. Try explaining again.

FF7PC actually takes considerable persuasion just to get running in XP; use Google and you should easily find the relevant instructions. If you apply the appropriate patches, I suppose you might get it running in Windows 7, but I wouldn't count on it - your best bet in the end probably is indeed a virtual machine running XP.

It's meant for Windows 95, if you're going to use a virtual machine why not use Win 95 instead of XP?

If you do get it running, then you may want to check out the graphics mods that are available.

Because there is no hardware acceleration for Windows 95 running in a virtual machine.

Of course, if you want to use the software renderer Windows 95 would make sense. I don't think it really makes too much of a difference.

By the way, there are music mods too, but I think the PC MIDI synth does a perfectly adequate job of replicating of Playstation's instruments.

Windows 95 is kind of a pain in the ass.

I'd recommend Windows 98 if you can get that to work--anything that runs in 95 will run in 98. Otherwise yeah, try using XP.

This is quite interesting to me...wonder if they've done the same thing with VIII PC? Not that I cared quite as much about VIII as I did about VII.

Some day (perhaps this is wishful thinking), I always wanted to go back through this game. Not sure I ever will...but some of the mods look pretty cool. Did a bit of searching and found:

Please post back if you get this working; I'm curious.
You are startled by a grim snarl. Before you, you see 1 Red dragon. Will your stalwart band choose to (F)ight or (R)un?

Wow, that's news to me! The new graphics driver would seem to make even the old, slow Q-Gears project redundant. Maybe getting it to run under Windows 7 isn't quite so out-there after all.

Did Q-Gears ever go anywhere? I don't think I even saw a demo come from that...

The new renderer is pretty much what everyone's been wanting all these years. Latest version is linked here, he seems to only keep the latest one hosted and all the other links break. FF7 looks very nice at 1080p, and the framerate is higher! Now I need to enable soundfont support on my Audigy 2 ZS...

I think there's still one guy quietly toiling away at it.
