    Default Good DOS ports of arcade games?

    After playing Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo and finding it to be the closest thing to the arcade (IMO) and then playing the subpar ports of both Mortal Kombat and Altered Beast, I thought "Is there any other good DOS translations that aren't Street Fighter or Pac Man?"

    So, basically, let's list some off:

    -Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo
    -PC-Man (Homebrew Pac-Man port, nearly arcade accurate)
    -The Simpsons (It's either this or the C64 version)
    -Mortal Kombat II (Much better than MK1's port)

    That's all I have for now.

    Street Fighter (the ORIGINAL) suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks .

    I have a version of Cabal on that pink monitor video format, whatever it's called, and it's actually pretty decent.

    All the arcade ports NovaLogic did are very good, in my opinion: True to the source material and sporting very nice Ad Lib soundtracks. From memory, I know they at least did:

    * Arkanoid: Revenge of DoH
    * Bubble Bobble
    * Rastan

    However I know I'm forgetting some. Any case I've got a 1:1 hardware recording of their Revenge of DoH soundtrack up for download at the Ad Lib music archive, should you wish to give it a listen.

    MK 3, NBA Jam, Primal Rage, T2 arcade Game, and Wrestlemania:The Arcade Game are all solid, though not perfect. I think T-Mek on pc is supposed to be pretty solid too, but I have not played it myself. Though you may beg to differ on these anyway, since you didn't like the port of Mk 1 on Pc. MK1 on Pc was actually a pretty solid port if you had the audio working fine, and a gravis gamepad. It played just as good as the Genesis port,but the graphics were a lot better then the Genesis. The voice samples were worlds better, and all the endings were intact, along with the demo screens.

    It was definitely superior to the C64 version, sure, but it was still quite a ways off. Then again, it was also considerably better than a lot of other PC games at the time.

    As I recall, X-Men: Children of the Atom turned out pretty well. And maybe Virtual On.

    I liked the old Atarisoft Ms. Pac-Man port, though it played better with joystick.
    I remember the Qix port being pretty good.
    Dig Dug was ok.
    I remember DK and Zaxxon being pretty good.
    Williams Arcade Hits was orignially DOS based. Emulation rather than ports, but very well done.

    Jrok wrote some darn good DOS ports of Pac/Ms.Pac & Qbert from back in the day. They still hold up today if you can actually play them.

    Can you actually even play them on Windows 7 32 or 64 bit easily?

    DOS programs will not run under Windows 7 64-bit, period. Unless you use DOSBox.

    I played the Ms Pacman using Dosbox. Very good clone except that there is a weird slowness when I have most of the pellets all eaten up. I wonder if that is a by product of the fact that it was written for a much older/slower system.

    DOSBox takes care of that. In fact, the problem might well be caused if its cycles were set to "auto" such that DOSBox was trying to throttle the game further.

    Oh I also forgot about the Champ clones and it looks like they're still available here: http://www.champ-em.com

    DOS clones of arcade games were really all I searched for in the early days of the web (I'm sure there are a lot of them I forgot about). but of course when emulation started happening that pretty much blew the whole scene up.

    I have literally thousands of old games on floppy and hard drive directories stashed away. I'll have to go through the list and see if any stuck out as being great.

    Just looking at the A's in my list ... Attaxx was a pretty good conversion. Afterburner was okay, but probably wouldn't impress anybody today. APB was pretty good.

    Maybe tomorrow I will go through the B's.

    The B's aren't as good. There's Bananoid, a great Arkanoid clown but not a port, and someone already mentioned Bubble Bobble.

    In the C's you've got Crossbow which was pretty good at the time. I have an old copy of Crazy Climber, but I believe it required Windows 95.

    D brings us Defender, Double Dragon (I have 2 and 3, but not 1 for some reason), and Dragon's Lair 1 and 2 (yes, for DOS).

    I don't see anything on E:.

    With the word "Windows" and the Windows logo both on the front of the box, I'm guessing she won't run in DOS.
