Thanks, I was getting kicked into that password thing but it does actually work. Still would be nice to hear that from Sony instead of a random person on the DP forums.

My buddies girl called me up today asking what was up with the PSN and I told her what was going on, he usually plays Madden 11 with his brother that lives in another state every night and can't now because these hacks want to be douchebags. The PSN being down doesn't bother me that much, but I feel for the ones that frequently do, since not everyone goes on to pwn the n00bz on BLOPS, some actually go on to play with friends/family that are a great distance away.

Besides being a PlayStation Plus subscriber, I have MLB.tv, which I signed up for specifically because I could watch Red Sox games on my TV (especially since the silly-ass blackout rules for Las Vegas don't seem to apply to my current IP). Now, I have to use my computer, which makes multi-tasking practically impossible. I can only imagine the annoyance factor for hockey fans who actually shelled out the insane price for NHL GameCenter-in case you haven't noticed, only a third of the first-round playoff games have been on NBC and/or Versus. I'm of the mind that paying customers definitely deserve some reimbursement for the PSN outage.

Check the link they were citing: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/04/25/psn-update/

Sony is saying that they don't have a timeframe "at this point in time", which is pretty indefinite.

"Indefinitely" does not mean forever. It means quite literally an unknown amount of time.

If Sony hadn't clearly reported that they are "...working to get them back online quickly." I'd be concerned, but let's try not to react to all the obviously divisive news articles cropping up.

Yes, this situation undeniably sucks, yes the official information available is sparse, but as far as gaming news goes, it's a slow month. This is an opportunity for sites to get some hits and generate some traffic with fantastical headlines from people frantically looking for answers.

I have complete faith that Sony is working as hard and as fast as they're able to to resolve this, it would be absurd to think otherwise. In all likelihood It may take a few more weeks, but it's not like they're shutting PSN off until the next console generation and there's no evidence that supports any such allegation.

I agree, but I feel that most customers won't care and probably abandon PSN services in favor of XBLA. The reason I say this is because of experience Ive dealt with, and continue to deal with, with customers. Some are willing to wait (like many of us here)...others refuse to wait and need their "quick fix".

I would like to see the effects of this in the long run. My personal prediction is a good chunk of loss regarding user base.

There's also a large portion of gamers that have BOTH PS3 and 360 (as well as Wii and PC) to choose from where online gaming is concerned. So, getting a "fix" is as simple as playing online games elsewhere without the need/necessity to go out and buy a different system or sign up for a different service.

These things happen and they've happened elsewhere in some cases for longer periods of times.

Again, yes, it completely sucks, but this is hardly as sensational as some of the news articles I'm seeing today are making it out to be.

Oh yeah...there are a ton of people that would rather buy a 360 than wait an "indefinite" amount of time. I know a fair number of my friends are irritated. Most of em aren't even heavy online players.

Seems I posted this in the wrong topic, so it might be old news by now, but:

I didn't save the link, but there was an article I read earlier that had a statement from a PSN employee that the problem came from hackers figuring out how to put the PS3 into developer mode. Further, the developer server, because it's supposedly owned by Sony, didn't do checks on credit card numbers to make sure they were correct or valid for some such reason, which led to the hackers using fake numbers to pirate crap off the PSN.

    Or something.

    New update.

I don't know about you guys, but I don't exactly feel thrilled to hear Sony telling me I should go get a credit check.

Sadly, my credit card is a bank card. :/ Thankfully, that card expires in four days.

Good news (finally) - PSN will be back up next week in a phased roll-out.

Free 30 days of Playstation Plus, Qrocity and a few not-yet-announced downloads as compensation.

    http://www.ripten.com/2011/05/01/psn...back-benefits/

I don't really care about the free stuff, since anything you download with Playstation Plus will expire after the 30 days, but I just hope they get it back up and it is SAFE.

Here is the full, official statement from Sony following their press conference in Japan addressing this issue yesterday.

    http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/...ble-this-week/

    Relevant bullet points/timeline:

    • Illegal intrustion occurred
    • Sony shut down access to PSN network
    • Multiple security firms engaged to perform full audits of their entire database and servers
    • No compromise of encrypted credit card data found
    • Sony completed a migration of all sensitive data to new, more secure servers at a different location
    • Additional security was added to existing security on their networks including more data defenders, more encryption, more firewalls and the ability to more closely monitor intrusions.
    • Ongoing investigations with the intent to identify and prosecute those responsible will continue.
    • When the network is reactivated next week, as an added security measure, access will not be granted to users until they change their password.
    • All subscription based services will get a credit on their time.
    • ALL PSN members get 30 free days of PLUS
    • PSN PLUS, QRIOSITY members get 30 free days of service
    • Yet to be determined free content will be provided, likely differing per region
    • Sony will assist consumers who want to enroll in an identity protection service further details to be available regionally on a local level

    So, there we go.

A very inconvenient downtime with what sounds to be an ultimately beneficial resolution for all. Sony gets better security up and running and users get some reasonable reparations for time lost.

I would pressing those who have Plus already will have a 30 day extension to their membership, right?

    Yes, they will.

Go back a page and check my bullet points, I tried to address anything relevant to what has been discussed on DP over the past few weeks.

I forget the name of the hypothesis, but essentially the PS3 should be the most secure system in the world right now. Kind of how the safest spot to be is where lightning has just struck...with the thinking being, you're standing in the spot most unlikely to get struck again.

I'm not going to be entering my CC info into my PS3, but in theory it should be the safest possible place to do it.
