Default Golden NES released in 1989???

A guy I know swears up and down that back in 88/89 the NES was released with a copy of The Legend of Zelda, and the NES was gold. He says that a buddy of his owns one and he has seen it with his own eyes. I told him, from what I know, Nintendo never released anything like that til the N64. So please help me put this argument to rest. And I need proof a list or something would be nice. Thank you in advance.

He's the one that has to prove it exists. It doesn't really work the other way around.

I told him to get into contact with his buddy that owns it and he said he was going to try to. Hell, people paint NES's all the time. I figure that's what his buddy did but I dunno. I've been researching it and have yet to find anything. I forgot to put that he also said it was released around Christmas time.

Never heard of this and there's no documentation, so it was probably custom-painted if anything.

Tell his friend to sell it on Ebay. Make sure to put r@re in the title for effect.
Everything in the above post is opinion unless stated otherwise.

It's about as real as the Mario game on Xbox and Halo on the PS2.

Spray painting something doesn't make it real.

Look... there's "gullible" written on the ceiling!

Seriously... this guy's full of it. Whatever "it" can be, he's full of it. "It" is a pretty versatile word.

The only golden NES thing I have ever seen besides games was the one special ROB that was in a Nintendo Power magazine. Nintendo took a photo of it for a special event. I think it was shown in Vol. 78 as part of the NES history memories

EDIT: Yeah the Golden ROB was modeled for the MTV award statuette in 1988. PS. these look like mockups.

I'm a collector, but only to a certain extent.
Not as extreme as Rickstilwell though.[/quote]

It probably wasn't even custom painted.

Most likely he's remembering the golden cartridge and now incorrectly thinks he remembers the system also being gold.

    Maybe he has xanthopsia?

    Xanthopsia:
An optic condition that causes objects to appear yellow; may occur in poisoning by picric acid and santonin, in jaundice, and in digitalis intoxication.

I would say this is the most likely answer.

If this community says it didn't happen, trust us, it didn't happen.

The "proof" is that nobody will ever be able to produce any evidence of this NES, and in a culture completely obsessed with digitally documenting everything that has ever happened ... the lack of info on the web about something as significant as an alleged commercial/retail version of the Nintendo Entertainment System should be all the proof needed.

I was thinking the same thing. I only asked about it cause I had never heard anything like that before and was very doubtful about it ever existing in the first place. Plus we have a bet going and it seems as though I have won.

yeah, no NES system was ever produced by Nintendo in a gold color, anywhere in the world. If your Friend's friend still has this system, tell him to send a pic your way with his cellphone or something.

Depending on how old he was, its easy for kids to "remember" something, then when they are older they still "remember" what likely never existed or was over exaggerated.

Spray paint is easy to use as well. I have a feeling if Nintendo produced a Golden system it would be a nice shiny metallic, an attribute that you can not achieve with a spray can. Maybe it could have been painted with automotive paint to get this effect but I dont think anyone began going that crazy with customization until the recent years.

Sometimes Famicoms and top-loading NES systems have the same yellowing problem as the SNES. So maybe it was a really dingy system.
