Anyone got any tips or advice on powering characters up early, or any general tips?

I've never played it, but this is always a good source:

We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.
Get to the Hu Lao Gate level, and play it over and over and over again in Practice mode. You get to keep the power ups you get for killing generals when you save, and after about 5-7 times thru, you'll be powerful enough to whip thru most of the game.

Thanx max, for the time being I took a liking to Sun Shang Xiang. I figured till i open up the Hu gate level I'll run through one or two the others, mostly Yellow bandits.

Hu Lao Gate is like the second or third level. You can fight your way thru to it and then build up at it easily. Just remember to keep using the same guy no matter what....it takes a while for stats to build up on a single guy and if you switch a lot, you'll NEVER get there! I favor Xiaou Dun (the eyepatch guy) personally The Hu Lao gate is great to build up cause there's so many generals. What I do is just run pell mell thru and kill generals and ignore everyone else except gate captains. Kill generals and gate captains and you get the powerups and the added bonus of not having to fight soliders cause they vanish as you kill their superiors. Note: Do NOT fight Lu Bu, even from a distance....you have ZERO chance against him unless you're stunningly good AND at absolute full power...he's even more powerful than in the 2nd game. Even fighting him with arrows, you have no chance.
