Last update June 23, 2011. A little less than two months. Yes, it updates more often than either other system, but it's either extra security or they're actually adding additional features to make the console better.

For Playstation Plus members. There is now a feature that you can auto upload games of your choosing to your data storage each time you save the game(or each time you do the automatic updates, don't remember which.) If Sony didn't fix the data storage working for non PSN Plus subscribers I'd still be able to use that awesome feature. I'm not paying $50 a year to use it though.

There's a new menu on the XMB called TV/Video services, which wasn't really needed but whatever.

3D support for additional features(useless if you don't own a 3DTV, lossless audio on Bluray, and 3D pictures can be viewed.
Everything in the above post is opinion unless stated otherwise.

After a system update, I jump over to Wikipedia to view the list of 'what did that just do'.

-New auto upload function for online game save data back-up.
-Trophies will sync automatically at the timing of auto download.
-New recommendation function added that enables users to share their recommendations for PlayStation Store items with PlayStation Network friends. Users will be able to send messages with a store link from the product pages within the PlayStation Store.
-New category called "TV/Video Services" added to the XMB.

Apparently, the same update for the Japanese PS3 added some new settings for the PSP Remaster series like various video settings and original PSP saves as well. Looks like it'll be awhile before we see any PSP Remaster series games over here I guess (MGS and God of War Collections are not part of the PSP Remaster series and, technically, I believe only Monster Hunter Portable is the one title that fits under that category)..
Mika: Where are you taking me, Gillian?
Gillian: To look at videos on YouTube...
Mika: *sigh* No more videos of a drunk Harry dancing with a dead Snatcher...
Giliian: Nope, it's better...Its LiquidPolicenauts YouTube Videos!
Gillian: And after that, you should also visit

I'm pretty sure the biggest items were the trophy and game save features. Everything's going to be stored in the cloud from now on. Got to give Sony credit for that one. M$ needs to get their shit together and allow uploading of save files now!

There was a new update put out yesterday, but no word on what it added/subtracted yet. Aside from 'improves stability'.

The PSN has been a bit buggy for the last few hours and there are a few stories flying about on how the update is causing systems to yellow light. So, same shit that happens every time the PS3 is updated.

I think I've about given up on updating my PS3. I can't seem to turn it on without it needing to do an update anymore. Add that to the fact that I almost never turn it on and don't use PSN for anything it seems kind of like a waste of time.

I'm not gonna complain about too much updating, when it seems like Nintendo hasn't updated the Wii in a year or so. Come on Nintendo, let me see the flashing blue light, time for a major update already!

It was never a big issue with me. I don't have a wifi modem, so connecting the PS3 online basically means no internet to the PC. So, I'll only connect it if I plan on getting something off the PSN. Otherwise I don't bother.

My Wii was never up to date up till I finally modded. Thing was always too buggy to get a decent signal so I could never download games, let alone updates.

A thread about PS3 having a lot of firmware updates?

Don't we already have a "dead horse" thread going here?

Probably a mix of both, but I would guess more security features?
