Default 3-D effect on the NES

I have two 3-D games for the NES (Rad Racer and 3-D WorldRunner) and neither of their 3-D modes "works" well. Yes, when I hit the select button the screen switches to *cough* 3-D mode, but the effect leaves more than a little bit to be desired. I am using a pair of 3-D glasses that I bought at a toy store and NOT the glasses that would have originally came with either of the games. Is it possible that the 3-D effect of the games actually works with the packaged glasses that came with either game? I would assume all 3-D glasses are created equal but I might well be dead wrong. What if anything do ya'll know about this. I am using a CRT/tube TV, by the way, with my NES so there shouldn't be an issue with the hardware. Thanks for your input be it rock-hard fact or conjecture!

Nah, it never really worked. The Japanese versions of the games were compatible with a 3D Famicom headset, which did a better job...

Pretty much the same deal as the Master System 3D glasses.

The JP 3D Worldrunner for FDS, Tobidase Daisakusen, uses red/blue glasses like the US one. I don't have a source, but I read it somewhere and tried the FDS game out in emulator (the actual FDS rom, not the hacked Famicom one). I tried to find videos on youtube, but none of them showed off the 3D mode.

I was disappointed that the video didn't show the 3D mode of Tobidase Daisakusen (all of the footage seemed to be from the US game).

I have the fds version of Tobidase Daisakusen, and you are correct, it uses the same red and blue 3d as the u.s. Version. Ironically, the game comes in a huge box, but doesn't come with 3d glasses (i bought the game factory sealed!)

The rad racer 3d effect just plain doesn't work, imo. I've heard the 3d world runner effects work better, but I've not tried it myself.

Yup, the Famicom 3D System mode was added to JJ Tobidase Daisakusen Part II but the first game is lame 3D only.

Oh well. Thanks for the replies. I have faint, hazy memories of renting 3D WorldRunner and the 3D not working but I wasn't sure if my mind was playing tricks on me or not.

Famicom has some interesting peripherals. Check out the inflatable punching bag.

When it comes to 3D anything, it all rests on the quality of the glasses. If the red and blue lenses aren't the same color as the images on screen, then the whole 3D effect falls apart. NASA has released a bunch of 3D pictures of all sorts of things, from asteroids to Mars vistas, but the only red/blue glasses I have (from Spike & Mike's Festival of Animation featuring "Here comes Dr. Tran") just don't work well with the hues in the photographs. Meanwhile, there's a bunch of 3D pictures of Germany on Flickr that work nearly perfectly with my crappy glasses.

I suggest you fool around with the color on your TV screen, adjusting the red and blue filters and see if that might help the 3D effect work better.
