Step one - remove the cover using a special XBOX360 cover removing tool that you can buy online.

Step two - remove the interior metal shielding exposing the main CPU, DVD drive, and other electronic components.

Step three - carefully disconnect the DVD drive.

Step four - place the individual components of the RROD 360 into individually labeled plastic (or paper, your choice) bags and set them aside for later.

Step four - go out and buy a new XBOX360 slim, take it home, hook it up and restore your account.

Step five - take the individually labeled plastic bags containing your RROD 360 components to your local electronics recycle center.

Step six - go home and play with your new XBOX360 slim.

Look on Craigslist for someone local to fix it. Should run you $40-$50 (US).

There are multiple videos on youtube that can show you how to fix it, search for x-clamp fix.

    This is what I did:

    -Removed the two heatsinks
-Cleaned them to a mirror-like finish
-Bought some thermal paste, new brass screws and washers
-Screwed it back together, which took a bit of work
    -Played a game on it
-Left it sit dormant for months afterwards
    -Considered selling it
-Decided to give it as a gift
RIP bargora, you will be greatly missed. That is how we do things on Giedion Prime.

or put it up on craigslist you'd be surprised...
I put up my old xbox 360 which had the RROD on it up for free.. a college kid in burlington vermont (about a hour away) wanted it. and i was up there for another reason too so its not like i wasted a bunch of gas just to give this kid a xbox. Keep in mind i put free on the ad....
The kid gave me 20 bucks for my trouble. I was like "sweet!"

Yes. I was obviously being facetious.

If you can "repair" a RROD, don't throw the system out ... but know that it's on borrowed time.

There are plenty of DIY techniques to "repair" a RROD, however to the best of my knowledge they're all temporary as the design flaws which contribute to/cause a RROD will always eventually supersede in the long-term any corrective measures that the user employs.

I still think investing in a slim is the best way to go if you want to "fix" a RROD situation.

hence why i gave mine away i was like none of these look permanent and majority of them look jerry-rigging it style
my favorite being you tape pennies to components to make it act like a heat sync
