Default Black N64 with clear green cartridge slot

I found a N64 at a thrift shop today. It was in very good condition and came with Mario 64. When I opened it to clean it, which I always do when I get a new system, I noticed it had a clear green cartridge slot
(you know, part you can only see if you hold open the little doors, also the part you cut as part of making it region free.)

The system didn't appear to have ever been open before since it still had the sticker on the expansion slot and the screws seemed untouched. Any idea how this happened?

Hmm well some looking on the internet told me that particular system may have been made before the colored systems came out, so it may have had a limited run.

If it's region free then there ya go you don't have to worry about those tabs when playing American or Japanese games on your system.

By black do you mean actual black or the standard original dark gray?

Either way, any chance of some pictures? Sounds interesting about the green stuff.

I've seen speculation that they were hardware builds towards the end of the N64's production cycle where the cart door slots were assembled with extra stock from the clear green colored units.

I got the Gold version in and I looked in the cart slot and it was green as well.
