Default Consoles without updates - a rare future item?

I was wondering since nowadays you can download dashboard and system software updates, and more or less have to for the PS3 and X360, I was wondering if a sort of niche rarity in the future might be brand new consoles that haven't been updated. IE; buying an Xbox 360 that still uses the original blade menu from it's launch days.

I know in regards to hacking PSPs and iPhones, firmware is a big deal, or at least was when I was researching it a few months ago. It was tough to go back so hardware with older firmware/software was sought after more than a regular up to date unit.

    Any thoughts on this?

I don't know about the Xbox, but most of the updates for the PS3 are for the following:

    1. Further reinforce copy protection and patch existing bugs that allow users to bypass it.

    2. Fix bugs with Blu-ray playback and allow for more Blu-ray related features.

    3. Fix bugs with PSN/PlayStation store, and allow for more PSN/PlayStation Store related features.

    4. Further reinforce copy protection and patch existing bugs that allow users to bypass it.

    So I'm guessing no.

Only for PS3 linux. And by then more powerful/expandable/etc PCs in a far smaller form factor than the PS3 will be readily found cheaper.

To have the first version of firmware would be a severe hindrance to use. Rare only because it's pretty nutty.

If you are not going to run the up-to-date FW version, you'd be better served to have CFW.

Why would you bother? As if it is really that hard to wire in a xD card into a 360 and run old firmware. Running it 24/7 with the original blades would be moronic and you'd either run it for kicks or figure out how to patch games to not mind the fact someone is a hoarder.
I fix things. You name it, I'll work on it. Want something modded? Recapped?

I don't see them being particularly valuable, but I could see a few really dedicated collectors being interested in the various interfaces.
For XBOX 360, a JTAG modded unit could run just about any firmware, so I think that would be the better option.
I'm not so sure about the PS3. Mods seem to have stopped at 3.55.

I would guess the blade thing would only be of interest to someone who just loved that setup and couldn't get used to the new look.

I'm a collector, but only to a certain extent.
Not as extreme as Rickstilwell though.[/quote]

The blade interface was so much cleaner than the mess we have today.

^Agree. I don't mind what we have but it was so much cleaner. I just figured one day original consoles might become a collector's item of sorts, in the way that gamers don't always collect what's practical and useful, just what other gamers don't have.

Well Xbox 360's with the original Dash are a sought after item even today.. especially for those who want to Jtag. If it's a jasper model it's even more valuable.

That being said I think there was an update yesterday where they could run unsigned code on any 360 with a reset exploit. So those days might be numbered

Interesting... perhaps I WILL have a use for my out of warranty, un-jtaggable Xbox 360 that RRoD'd and is just sitting in my closet.

Well, my NES, SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, Turbo Duo, PS1 and PS2 have never had firmware updates. Maybe they'll be a hot commodity?

I would think that PS3's that still have their "install other OS" option might be worth something to the right person. I still have one of those that I bought from a yard sale a few months ago.

My 360 still has the blades. Mainly because I abandoned the system after my nephew borrowed it and red ringed it. I only ever updated it with Xbox Magazine cover disc updaters and never went online with it. One of these days I'll pay someone to repair it. But then it'll still break down eventually, so I'm not going to rush out and do it right away.

Having older firmware usually makes modification easier, but even if you have a version that's newer and not as easy, it gets easier with time once tinkerers find a workable process for that version.

I got custom bios on my AES, so just extrapolate that out to this and ramp up the ease and time table by a large factor due to the internet etc.
