How do you tell if a Famicom game is a bootleg or not?

What's up with islands? Get more land.
What's up with deserts? Get less sand.
the shell is usually a dead giveaway. Most pirates come in different shell shapes then the official versions. Labels are usually entirely different as well.

Nothing wrong with bootlegs, a great way to play a rarity with real NES or Famicom controllers.
TEN guesses which one on this older GEN console.

Uhh...What? He didn't ask if there was anything wrong with them. He asked how to spot one. A lot of people on this forum are collectors and collectors usually don't like bootlegs. Urzus made it pretty clear he wants to make sure he doesn't get a bootleg.
Anyway, to answer the question, as Parodius said, check out the label. Bootlegs usually have plenty of warning signs. Cart shape, label, etc. are often wrong. I've seen bootlegs that manage to get the name wrong as well, so check for misspellings.
