Neat.

Not a stellar representation of the game/characters, but a memorable bit of Saturday Morning Video Game Toon history.

DVD? I mean the game itself was on a better format. I didn't read the entire article, but for the love of god, tell me they will release it on Blu-ray.

You're saying Laser Disc is a better format than DVD?

It's an 80's Hanna-Barbera-esque (Ruby-Spears basically copied the Scooby-Doo style wholecloth) production; there would be -nothing- to gain quality-wise from a Blu-Ray release. This isn't Don Bluth-quality, here.

It's still good to add this to the collection of Toon DVDs based on videogames, though; in fact until Saturday Supercade comes around, this one will chronologically be the earliest, yes?
Any word on exactly what hoops WB has been trying to get through, besides Sony's apparent ownership to the Q-bert segments?

He's probably referring to the HD Remasters which IIRC were remastered from the film prints.

ALSO:

For any reference as to the possible contents of this DVD:
This assorted set WB released already has a single episode.

Wasn't there a Pole Position cartoon that preceded both this and Saturday Supercade?

I don't know if it preceded DL or the Supercade, but it was my one of the reasons I looked forward to getting out of bed on Saturday morning. I have a bootleg DVD with 6 episodes on it, and I think there was a DVD release in the UK or Australia. I still keep an eye out for that show.

Since this thread has touched on both Pole Position and Saturday Supercade, I couldn't resist posting this ad I found recently:

When I think of wholesome Saturday morning kid fare, I think Richard Pryor. The '80s were a great decade.

Wow, that's awesome! I didn't even know Richard Pryor had a cartoon! I LOVE Dungeons and Dragons though, and Muppet Babies was good too. Saturday Supercade and Pole Position I have yet to watch, have they hit DVD yet?

It had a legit Region 1 release too, it's out of print though.

From the Amazon description:
Dan and Tess Darret are professional stuntmen whom learn from their Uncle Zachary, that their recently deceased parents were government agents working within the secret organization "Pole Position." Just as their parents, they are called to be part of this organization. They are equipped with two high-tech talking vehicles nmed Roadie and Wheels. Get ready for some fast paced fun & adventure. Get ready for, Pole Position! DVD Contents: 2 Discs featuring the entire series (13 Episodes)
Ugh. This is what I dislike about American cartoons. Why did there have to be a "spy" angle to it? Why couldn't it just be about racing? It's not like sporting competitions don't have plenty of drama of their own without having to pull government agencies and spy groups into it.

If they did that it would have been Speed Racer. They really only made the show vaguely related to car racing to cash in on the popularity of the arcade game at the time, including naming it "Pole Position". There's a reason why it only lasted one season.

Here's the first episode;

I swear the pet looks like a cross between a cat and a monkey. It has hands instead of paws, but looks like a cat. It's pretty creepy.

The real, Tatsuo Yoshida Speed Racer, or this Speed Racer?

Yeah, there are worse things this cartoon could've been than a clone of the best anime of the 1960s. I'm sorry but I couldn't sit through that episode. The animation was nice and the music was good, but the voice acting was stiff, the characters came off as painfully two-dimensional and... well, it just really had a stupid premise.

Didn't really mind proto-Snarf tho. Not as much as I hated those computers.
