Apparently it is played on the Famicom Box/Station- whatever that is. I'm guessing it is the Japanese version of Playchoice 10.

    That's Donkey Kong. (トンキーコング)

... why is it in a NES-styled cart, though?

    Edit: Oh wait.

Wow, stuff like that's gotta be incredibly rare, since they were just for stores and probably mostly got thrown out when the system dropped in popularity.

Depends where you look. If you have access to Yahoo Japan auctions, these pop up fairly often.

No, it only works with the famicom box. There is also the Famicom station which uses grey carts with the same labels. These carts will also only work with the Famicom station, they are not interchangeable. They will not even work on a regular Famicom.

They are not incredibly rare, but definitely hard to find and really only worth having if you have the proper Famicom Box or Famicom Station.

Not rare, but hard to find? Doesn't rare mean hard to find? Sure they might not go for a lot of money because there's no real demand, and I'm sure they turn up more in Japanese circles, but it's still something most people are never going to run across.

And I meant more the entire box/station setup, not just the cart.

But in any case, it was an interesting thing to learn about, so that's what really matters.

to me, a RARE item is something that maybe only a few exist of and costs an ungodly amount of money (Nintendo world championship cart for example) a game that is HARD TO FIND would be this Famicom box cart, theres plenty out there, but its still gonna take some searching to obtain and the cost remains reasonable....

and yes to find a complete setup with system and games is RARE...theres plenty of games as many were produced so you could change the available titles at your motel/hotel/waiting room/wherever these things were in place. The actual System itself is hard to find due to many of them being junked after the hotels and businesses dubbed them useless, especially since it can not be used with all games, most used game shops would not accept them, etc...so the majority of the Famicom Box/Stations ended up in the scrapyard.

My buddy while working in Japan back in the late 90s actually pulled a few Super Famicom Box's out of a huge dumpster at some site where a luxury hotel was being remodeled, he said there must have been at least 40 of them getting tossed.
