That's an impressive archive, thanks for putting it together and uploading your fair share of video! While it's a shame that there are so many unreleased/unfinished games on the Jaguar, it certainly means there's never a shortage of oddities and special finds to be had with this console.

Thanks for the compliment. Ya so many unfinished games for the Jag, but luckily a lot of them have been released and even some of them finished by homebrewers and released. The Jag has a great mix of games, from 16 bit type games to games that really show its potential, like AvP, Battlesphere, Iron Solder, Tempest 2000, Rayman. And more.

I got a little bit excited when I saw videos for unreleased games like Apeshit, but was a little let down when it was just 2 stills taken from GameFan Magazine back in the day... I would love to see actual footage.

lol ya sorry about that one. Rick Rolled ya a bit there. :P

Where's all the rest of the Jaggy fans? This system is so cool, just check out the variety of games. It's like the ultimate 90's system, has everything from 8 bit to 64 bit style games. Carts and CDs. And all kinds of other cool stuff.

I've a fan, even though I don't feel quite the same way that you do.

Many of the releases are pure junk in that list (Which contains quite a few things that barely even qualify as real games and at least one video that isn't even a Jaguar game - Area 51), games that were average at best, or games that represent a missed opportunity. For that last category in particular, World Tour Racing comes to mind as a prime example. With a bit of polishing, improvements to the frame rate, and a release date 5 years earlier than what it actually ended up being when Telegames picked it up, it could've been great and something still worth playing in 2011.

Instead it joins the plentiful ranks of what could've been on the system, right alongside many other games like Atari Karts and Checkered Flag (There's nothing worthwhile playing with that last one in the state that it was released in, but it was a start to a promising Virtua Racing clone just the same and I wish they had gotten another 6 months or so to spend on it instead of releasing it in the state they did).

I think there are 12 or so excellent games on the system and another 20 or so games that range from average to very good that are worth picking up (Within reason, I don't think the small handful of cd games that are actually worth playing is enough to justify buying the cd attachment and neither Battlesphere revision is worth the entrance price for someone trying to get into the system in 2011). But still, that's not a bad percentage at all in my mind for a console that only had about 55-60 games or so released during its commercial life and less than 20 games of any real value developed or published afterwards from Songbird, Telegames, the Battlesphere developer whose name slips past me, and the Gorf port for the cd drive attachment. In fact, it wouldn't shock me if the percentage of good to junk was actually close to, if not higher, than some contemporaries like the Game Boy and the 16 bit platforms.

I think it and the 3DO both are underrated systems with reputations that they don't deserve. There's no doubt that they were both commercial failures, were badly mishandled, and had plenty of junk that was published. But there's no shortage of excellent games on both platforms to be had in spite of that.

I think my personal favorite is Super Burnout. I love 2D sprite scaling racers and playing this still makes me feel like I just stepped into a arcade in the early 90's. It's not perfect, but the experience is hard to beat on a console. It still makes me wish the developers had focused on the 2D sprite scaling capabilities of this thing instead of wasted efforts on 3D games like I-War, Cybermorph, and many others. The games could've been great and it still would've set the system apart from the Genesis and SuperNes. And they'd actually be worth playing in 2011, unlike the situation with software like Hover Strike.

Super Burnout is a great game, a cult classic. Rumor has it the game was actually developed in the guys apartment on weekend with a borrowed Jag dev system! . That was in France. But ya, this game just oozes coolness.

I guess I am pretty hardcore but even I find fun in some of the Jags worst games. For instance I find Supercross 3d and Club Drive quite fun. I just like the early 3d stuff, because that is when I really started getting hardcore into being a gamer, right around 1994 when 3d polygon games were new.

I do too if I think it's a good game. I love games such as Star Fox on the SuperNes, games like F-22 and LHX on the Genesis, Stunt Race FX on the SuperNes, the Iron Soldier games on the Jaguar, and a whole range of arcade games like Hard/Race Drivin'.

Sadly, I just don't think any amount of care really went into most of the 3D projects for the Jaguar. But I can certainly understand someone enjoying the early 3D era since I have an appreciation for many such projects from the time. including some that have few fans (Like those two Genesis examples I just gave, although Majesco must've agreed with me 12 years ago or so since they licensed and rereleased both of them years after their original release).

I actually think Cybermorph is better than Starfox personally. :P Its free roaming, more difficult and longer game, better graphics, decent storyline and sounds except lack of music. control is good. And it is has the sexiest green lady around, skylar!

Iron Soldier on the Jag is SO good... So many people have never played that game and they are missing out. super smooth 3d graphics on the jag, killer music, great control, cool story and weapons. Mechs, and more. Iron soldier 2 is great too.

While I can't agree in the slightest about Cybermorph even being in the same class as Star Fox, I certainly agree about the quality of both Iron Soldier releases. I need to see what Iron Soldier III was like someday on the PSOne (No interest in picking up a Nuon, so that will have to make do).

I definitely agree on this point, and I think that sentiment applies to just about any of the mediocre-to-bad games in the Jaguar library. There's a general sense of incompleteness about this console which is supported by the sheer number of unfinished games for it, projects that were undertaken by aspiring developers but ultimately abandoned for a number of reasons. The Jaguar is, perhaps, the most grievous example of what happens when the first party neglects its third party software developers. Rarely has such potential been squandered in the video games industry.

There are many awesome 3rd party games on the Jag though. Wolfenstein 3d, Doom, AvP, Zool 2, Iron Soldier, Rayman, Myst, NBA Jam TE, Pinball Fantasies, Power Drive Rally, Super Burnout, Worms, to name some.

But ya, overall Atari didnt do a very good job supporting the 3rd party devs, to be fair though, Atari could barely afford to focus on their own efforts, let alone babysit the 3rd parties. Companies like Nintendo have the luxury of excess money, Atari was barely scraping by in the mid 90's and even had to sue Sega to keep the company alive another year or 2 in 1994 - 1995.

Seems like they still had millions in the bank when JTS acquired them. As I recall, their bankroll was one of the key reasons behind why they purchased Atari.

Edit - According to this, they had $50 million in cash when that happened.

ok, but how much money did nintendo and sega have in 1995? I bet a hell of a lot more than 50 mill. 50 mill wouldnt last long in the video game world where you are trying to sell systems and games and advertising. Not to mention I know for a fact Atari owed a bunch of 3rd party developers and Atari employees.

That Club Drive video.. a couple minutes into it and the game goes absolutely haywire and crashes, then takes a couple system reboots to get going again.. good stuff!

I wasn't out to argue that they had the same financial resources as Nintendo, Sega, or Sony.

I had been interested in the Jaguar ever since I saw the ads for the Tiny Toons game. The videos above were the first time I've seen the game in action...too bad it was never finished though. Quite a few of the games were pretty impressive looking for the time (such as Alien vs. Predator). Too bad I've never seen a system in the wild though just a few random games here and there.

Strangely, two or three retro game stores in this area have loose copies of Doom for the Jag... for around $29.99. I have no idea why different store chains all have them priced the same. Movie Trading Company is one of them, lately they've gotten pretty outrageous with pricing on some items. 3DO games for some reason tend to be priced beyond what anyone would pay for. And yet, I do occasionally see them sell. I guess to them they have no clue about these offbeat consoles, so they think that the games must be priced higher since they're scarce in comparison to PS1 games. I bought a Jaguar controller at a MTC location, and the guy behind the counter was dumbfounded by it. Had no idea what it was or why there were so many buttons on it. Probably the kind of guys who refuse to play a game that doesn't have an online multiplayer component.

Haha, ya that was pretty funny, game had a meltdown. When you saw the game trying to reboot, that was me quickly taking it in and out of the system blowing on the contacts trying to get it working ... classic gaming at its finest

I find it hard to believe Atari didnt use any of that 50 million and that JTS or whoever got the full 50 mill in 1996, pretty sure Atari got that money in 1993 and I thought used a lot of it to sell Jaguars etc.

Ya I guess Atari had problems dealing with the developers of tiny toons or problems with warner brothers over rights or something. Atari probably desperately want that title on their system since it was such a popular cartoon. Same thing with MK3, it was supposed to be on Jag CD but midway backed out for obvious reasons, not enough money to make on the Jag in 1995, all the devs abandoned ship on the Jag 3do and 32x in late 1995 and boarded the ps1 saturn and n64 ships M2 ship got lost at sea. :P and sunk.

It's not unusual for a business to go under while still holding on to significant financial resources. By 1996, it was quite clear that things were a lost cause and that their time as a viable company was at a end (They had $12 million in sales during the first 9 months of 1995 for an overall loss of $22 million, so they were essentially spending nearly three dollars for every dollar they earned). That simply can't be maintained for any period of time.

Rather than bleed their remaining funds in their bank account dry or try to hang on so long that they ended up in the red in a futile effort to keep going, they used it as an asset to make the company more valuable. If they had blown that money trying to stay around for a while longer, the shareholders probably would've got next to nothing. Instead, Atari's shareholders got shares in JTS, a hopefully viable company (Although I believe it ultimately wasn't).

JTS wanted them for their $50 million, more or less. At the time it was announced, Jack Tramiel stated that "we had a surplus of cash and I felt we needed to invest this cash in areas other than the game business."
