I think it's pretty fantastic, but a couple things do bug me with it. Since it's 3D but wants to play like the flat games, the depth of it all can mess you up on some jumps and moving around since the 3D isn't a 'Mario 64' style that's centered so you can really sense where you'll drop. I also loathe the stupid stars they force you to collect or the bar you from later in the game. I've never liked that as I like my platforming games about killing the stage start finish, not sight seeing all over for stars interrupting the flow.
I think the best masterpiece to me is the Wii U launch title of New SUper Mario Bros U. I hate the NEW SMB series for one reason or another (too short, buying the right to save, full worlds hidden, wonky physics.) I think Nintendo took criticisms to heart on that one because they said they went for a more classic handling and feel by trying to copycat up a true sequel to Super Mario World in style and substance and they so nailed it.
