You go around the board buying up property and collecting card types, spade, diamond, heart, club. Once you get all the card types you try to pass the bank which gives you a bonus payout and option to buy stocks, if you own stocks in an area, regardless if someone owns property there you gain interest. In between all of this there are squares which bring up a very brief mini-game to play. Sometimes it is just you and sometimes it is everyone playing. There are tons of board designs to choose from as well. The goal is to gain as much money as you can to meet the goal amount. You also have an option to buy someone elses property when you land on it at a slightly higher value, so it does add a nice challenge as well.
This game is not getting a lot of press regardless of Mario being on the cover, but I do suggest picking it up if you have someone you like to play board game with.
    hows the online play?

Since we were hesitating about getting this game, we rented it for the weekend. And our impressions is that, yes, it is a fun board game, but not necessarily worth $50. It's more like a game you'd get for $25. I wish there were more Dragon Quest characters to choose from, and the AI can be cheap sometimes (it just so happens that the computer-controlled characters will sometimes more easily land on squares that favor them). AFAIK, there is no online play.

The high number of boards do give this game a high replay value, though.

My bad, it's accessible when you choose 1-player game. You just can't combine (AFAIK) local and online multiplayer (say, 2 local players and 2 online). I'll try the online mode tonight (got till tomorrow to return the game to the video store).

From what I've seen of livestreams of the game, the online is surprisingly good and not laggy.

Is it worth getting this game for the single player mode or is it mostly a multi-player game?

I think it's more fun to play against other people, especially since the dice are biased in favor of the NPC. Like I wrote, it's a fun game, but not necessarily worth full price. It's the kind of game you want to rent first (or watch videos on youtube) to really see if it's for you.

So here we are now, seven months later, and we finally bought a copy when the price was lowered at $30 (brand new) at Best Buy. We should receive our copy on Monday. Finally, I never did try the online mode...

I have a feeling that the game didn't sell that well, and that out of the copies sold a good percentage were from people who thought they were getting Mario Party instead of a Monopoly-style board game. I have noticed that it's getting more difficult to find now.

My wife got this game on release and loved it since it's similar to some mini-game in the PSP Kingdom Hearts game. We played some versus matches but the AI can be brutal sometimes, and if you hated the randomness that can happen in Mario Party then this game is not for you. There is skill involved, but a lot revolves around luck as well.
