Default Metal Gear Solid Rising to Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

No, that title is not a misspelling.

It looks like Metal Gear Rising's development has shifted from being an in house Kojima Productions to Platinum games and has a very apparent shift in tone. Despite the story now taking place after MGS4 it looks like Raiden has gone all crazy bloodthirstily cyborg ninja again...great. I have plenty of respect for Platinum Games but this has now immediately shifted Rising into a wait and see category. Its looking much more like a Baoynetta-styled hack and slash game then an interesting take on Stealth Action hinted at a year ago. I'm also not a fan of, what I perceive from a short trailer at least, as a huge shift in story and "gamefeel". The E3 2010 trailer felt like another entry into the Metal Gear series, this latest one again just looks like another hack and slash action game. It could be good and it could not but this game is no longer an insta-buy for me and reaks of the "branching" out that usually leads to subpar titles in franchises like this.

However, after Platinum Games came on board, the story was changed to take place several years after METAL GEAR SOLID 4 to give them more of an opportunity to show off what they can bring to the series. Cyborgs are spreading at a rapid pace in the game’s world, resulting in earth-shattering superhuman action at every turn!
The original aim for a combination of stealth and action has also been enhanced, for a more aggressive new focus on pure, exhilarating action.

Naturally, Kojima Productions is still overseeing the game’s story and its world, and is also providing visual direction to ensure METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE retains the characteristic look of the METAL GEAR series. Though its exact identity is a step apart from the METAL GEAR SOLID games, the blood of the series still flows within this new METAL GEAR.
Kojima Productions and Platinum Games: Two world-class powerhouses among Japanese studios join forces to bring you METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE . What can we expect from this astounding combination? Keep your eyes on this site for more details!

It looks like Konami is going to post a video about what happened to the original development cycle in a few days so hopefully more light will be shed on what happened.

While work on such a high profile franchise is awesome news for fans of Platinum's work, I'm bummed out by the assumption that work on a Metal Gear game will mean that Platinum will not have the time/means to put a Bayonetta sequel on their lineup until after this Metal Gear game is done.

I'm also bummed at the prospect that this game may POTENTIALLY be a failure to the degree that it busts the studio before they ever get a chance to make a Bayonetta sequel. Hell, even if the game is a huge success, Kojima may put them right back to work on a sequel or portable iterations.

Mika: Where are you taking me, Gillian?
Gillian: To look at videos on YouTube...
Mika: *sigh* No more videos of a drunk Harry dancing with a dead Snatcher...
Giliian: Nope, it's better...Its LiquidPolicenauts YouTube Videos!
Gillian: And after that, you should also visit

I don't know what to think of this trailer? On one hand it looks awesome, but it also looks like it's straying too far away from tradition MGS games and turning into Bayonetta/Ninja Gaiden?!

So ...

Most people hated Raiden in the core game/stealth portions of MGS2, and most people loved Raiden in his NPC ass-kicking segments of MGS4 ... so, give him his own ass-kicking core game and ... people hate it?

Does not compute.

My impression is that people loved the stealth and core gameplay of MGS2. People hated the plot and stupid codex conversations about Christmas gifts and whatever other nonsense they had going with Rose.

That's how I feel at least.

This game feels so far off the map of MGS gameplay that I wish they had just gone with a new IP.

Eh, there have been and likely will continue to be plenty and I do mean PLENTY of opportunities for people to play as Snake (in his many varieties) in traditional MGS stealth stuff.

I don't see any need for complaining on that front, this isn't taking over the main series or anything.

I'm totally fine with a studio with an action pedigree like Platinum taking a character like Raiden and giving him an opportunity to do some crazy fun stuff.

Konami has really been messing with their ips lately. I really didn't like Castlevania:los,.for example.

At least Otomedius Excellent is totally on the mark, for what that's worth.

The problem is that the E3 2010 Trailer showed what could of been a pretty cool action game with the ability to slice almost anything in the environment. That coupled with what looked like very "real" and visceral effective one hit kills along with the typical Kojima sillyness of the watermelon made me think Kojima Productions were onto a really cool game with the original Rising that would of really made you feel like the cyborg ninja.

It might not have been simply as good as it originally seemed, techonology issues, or production issues could of all been the reason for the shift but still its disappointing. My problems aren't with Raiden or really even with Platinum Games the game just now no longer looks interesting and just looks like another modern hack and slash. IMO it would of been a lot more badass manually slicing soldiers and cars in half with the vibro-sword then hitting EVERY SINGLE GUY with several flashy cuts before they go down while tossing a metal gear ray like its Devil May Cry. This isn't even getting into the total change in story from between MGS2 and MGS4 to now significantly after MSG4.

Although Rising was certainty always going to be very different it still looked and felt like a Metal Gear game, this doesn't and a lotta people may love that but I don't. Hopefully its an awesome game because it looks like it might be a fun action hack'n slash however I'm still disappointed "Lightning Bolt Action" no longer looks like something new but rather more of the same.

Who knows maybe I'm just in fanboy bitchy mode for the moment about this but I was really looking forward to some sort of announcement after all the buildup to this and I am left severely disappointed.

What could a Bayonetta sequel be ABOUT? Bayonetta ended with
Bayonetta killing everything up to and including god
. I can't possibly imagine a way they could follow that up and not be a disappointment.

I'm not saying I hate this game, it looks like it could be great? I just hope it doesn't stray too far away from traditional MSG gameplay and turn into a hack and slash?! The sword fighting element looks very cool, I just hope this new developer also puts in traditional MGS gameplay like stealth and crazy boss fights. I loved MGS2, I didn't give a flying fuck that you played as Raiden the second part of the game. Like someone mentioned earlier the only things that I didn't like about MGS2 were the random, nonsense codec conversations between Raiden and Rose, and the storyline just trailed off too much about things that had nothing to do with the main plot line.

In video games much like comic books, even the most resolute endings can be revisited, rewritten, retconned or negated.

I'm totally fine leaving what a sequel could be about up to Platinum. I'm sure they could give us something entertaining.

I just want another opportunity to play with the character and in that world, possibly in a more refined state.

In the meantime though, tooling around the future world of MGS as badass Raiden is fine with me.

FYI, according to Kojima, the sword cuts anything/everything mechanic has been retained and is in fact still the core/key mechanic of the development of the game by Platinum.

Yeah I've been keeping up with the latest news and Its pretty disheartening. It sounds like the original concept was a big hit with people in-house but as development dragged on they couldn't form a coherent game around this mechanic. Then instead of working on this they chose to fill in the other developmental gaps around an unfinished game concept, not knowing where to go from that...which of course is going to get your project justifiably canned.

I'm still not a fan of the shift from Metal Gear Solid's clean visual style to every slash and hit being emphasizes with blue and red sparkles..again like a devil may cry/bayonetta type of experience. Also based on the trailer the two times when Raiden actually dices some random peon it looks like its being performed as some sort of Trance/overdrive mode then a core gameplay mechanic. The "core" of the game seems to be hitting the enemy again and again until they fall apart in a predetermined manner instead of manually slashing things into pieces. I can also only guess based on the trailer that no-kill completions are out since its been turned into a "flair" hack'n slash similar to the aforementioned games.

I am so disappointed because of how hyped for this game I was. I really love metal gear and the ridiculous but interesting storyline, combined with Raiden being fleshed out, innovative take on an Action genra, and MGS4 level visuals was something I was really excited for. Instead of that were going a game that might be really fun but in the end will just be more of the same hack'n slash that we see in bayonetta and similar titles. This announcement is pretty much the opposite of what I wanted to hear about Rising. Instead of becoming a unique title on its on its going to nearly fit into the hack'n slash category, which IMO is boring compared to what it could of been.

I am pretty much bitching that my vision of what Rising could of been would of been better then what I've seen in a 3 minute trailer. Irrational and unreasonable yes, but I can't really shake that until we more details and gameplay footage on what Rising: Revengence will be vs. what it was going to be.

Hey, you're totally entitled to your opinion and have every right to be disappointed with a dynamic shift in game design/aesthetic. I completely get it.

I'd be similarly bummed if the next Bayonetta or Batman Arkham game was handed off to a different studio with a different vision and they presented something that was visually very different than what I wanted/expected.

I just wasn't sure if you were clear that the "cut anything" mechanic was still present.

I saw the early footage of Rising from a few years back and this does look like a different game, however, from what that article states, it doesn't sound like Kojima's in house developers were ever going to get the early version of the game off the ground.

I now see that auto-correct butchered some parts of my previous post. lol

I really just need to step back and wait for more details to emerge before I rant some more, which should be in a day or two. This could be a game on its own its just being completely overshadowed in my mind but what I thought it was going to be.
