Default Super Mario 3d land...not that great?

So, I got sm3dl for christmas, and I'm about 4 worlds in. I'm finding myself rather...unimpressed.

For starters, the game is linear as it gets. The world map is literally a straight line. You can replay the levels to get all 3 star coins, but that doesn't do much, other than unlock an extra level before the airship on each map.

The levels themselves aren't really doing anything new, are very short, and very straightforward. There's only one exit to each level, and really not much incentive to explore.

I feel like the game has already shown me all its cards, and I'm not sure it's worth continuing. New smb had so much more going on, and this just sense like a step back. It's like they were just desparate to get a mario game on the 3ds without actually having any good ideas to implement.

Has anybody played it all the way through? Does it get better? I mean, it's fun as platformers go, but Mario games I just expect more.

I got it when I got my zelda 3ds and I like it so far. but that's just me. Games are very subjective, either you like them or you don't. A matter of preference to me.

Keep on playing till the end. There's a second set of worlds (like remixes of the first playthrough but harder) that unlocks after you finish.

So it's like the original Super Mario Land then?

Super Mario Land had no world map.

Gameplay wise if it's linear though, I don't see the problem with it. All Super Mario Bros games up to Super Mario World were linear. Yoshi's Island then went back to the linear aspect of the game, although you went around the stages looking for flowers and red corns, getting an additional stage if you got 100% on all prior stages. As long as it's a good game, linear or not, don't see much of a problem. Special exits don't make a game better or worse, means there's just alternate pathways and stages to unlock in those special exits.
Everything in the above post is opinion unless stated otherwise.

This may have more to do with it than anything. I've just gotten spoiled by more open ended games.

I'm just gonna go ahead and keep playing it, and enjoy it for what it is. For what its worth, it has the best 3d effects I've seen on the system.

That's really good to know. I am finding the game enjoyable but really easy so to know that there are harder levels is an incentive to keep playing.

So far, I'm loving it! I like how the levels are short and sweet! Good game to play in short bursts.
You don't have to be smart, you don't have to have all the facts, you just have to be confident.

Other than the odd depth perception jump into oblivion, I find the game a worthwhile buy.
