Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (NES, 1/5/12)
    Final Fantasy (NES, 2/20/12)

This is another one I never beat as a child. Glad to have completed it, but I found the experience pretty boring.

Was it painful to complete? I tried playing Mega Man II and stopped after about 2 minutes because of the lack of precise controls.

I am so close the end and all I have to do is grind forever to become strong enough to get to and beat the final boss. It's so boring I just can't bring myself to do it yet. Only time I ever beat it was on an emulator with savestates and playing the game at 2x speed.

Sadly I've only beaten games that have been relevant to Why Did I Play This?

    Crystal's Pony Tale
    Sonic Heroes
    Mad Maestro
    Tokobot Plus

    Also hi everybody.

It was a chore to finish the the game for sure. I felt like I grinded (ground?) up my levels well early on, but that last dungeon really requires a few times through, then using the exit spell, saving, buying 99 more potions and going back at it. Nauseatingly boring, and just to get a few levels up, so that you have a better chance of survival. Really, I gave up on it back in January, only finished it off because I've been under the weather the past few days.

I remember hating this game as a kid. We rented it a few times, and all the bugs and lack of any instructions, in game or otherwise, really made it difficult to get anywhere. I've played a few other Final Fantasy games for other systems, but I wonder if any of the other NES ones are worth it.

I mostly play puzzle and arcade style games, so it's rare for me to beat a game. However, I would like to beat some more NES classics that were really tough for me as a kid.

    1. Kendo Rage (SNES) 1/31
    2. B.O.B. (SNES) 2/24

Quite challenging and not particularly good, but I've played worse than B.O.B. Not much more to say about it than that. It doesn't really deserve any hate or praise, so it's pretty well earned its largely forgotten status. Not that I feel like it was a waste of time, though. It was still a worthwhile experience playing through it.

I added Suikoden IV to my master beaten list today. I found it very annoying in comparison to the first three, but it wasn't a terrible game. It just made me mad so many times and most RPGs don't do that to me so much.

And yeah, the other two NES Final Fantasy games are much better than the first one. 2 is still kind of annoying due to the fact attacks don't automatically redirect yet, but the story and character meeting makes it far more interesting.

3 is pretty much fine as it is on NES at least when compared to 1 & 2, and that's a good thing due to the fact there aren't any 2D remakes of it. At least the game redirects your attacks when you defeat a targeted enemy before everyone makes a move. The music is also better in terms of instrumentation; the battle music actually has emulated drums and is generally the same soundfont as Rad Racer. I remember how great it was when someone finally released the full translation patch for the game.

    1) Uncharted 2 Amongst Thieves PS3 - After shelving Uncharted Drake's Fortune for a year (no reason just other games to play) I did not make that mistake when I got Uncharted 2 for Christmas. Every bit as amazing as the first, now I need a price drop on Uncharted 3
    2) Rage Xbox 360 - Probably the most anti climactic ending to a game I have seen in a long time. Missions towards the end also felt tedious and the game became more of a chore in my opinion.

Cross off another A-list game in my backlog. Finished Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood this afternoon. I bought it at launch but never played more than an hour or two. I started over from the beginning last week and watched the credits roll today. I may stick with it to knock out a few more achievements. The AC open-world gameplay style has always been engaging enough to me. Just running around on rooftops and collecting flags is fun in itself.

By starting the game by pressing "0" and finding a sword in just the right place in Level 1, I beat Syobon Action in less than a minute AND without losing a life.

My first game of the year:

2/25/12 Dead Space (PC) - excellent game all the way through, but the last few chapters succumb to that old game-lengthening trick: "Oh Isaac, you've found what we need to get the space shuttle moving...damn, somebody disabled [blah blah]....I'm gonna need you to go find the 3 [blah blah] that are definitely not spread out in improbable places throughout the level!" Other than that...fun game!

    10. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles - Genesis

Did you guys know I edited the rom hex code to allow this game to save data on the Everdrive MD? PM me if you want the fixed version.

On this playthrough as Sonic & Tails I beat the game with over 80 lives, all 14 emeralds and 9 continues. I kept doing well in those bonus stages so score and lives were quickly racked up. I finished Marble Garden Act 1 with over 500 rings! I'll play the other characters' games later but beating it with 1 mode counts as beaten for the year.

Two days ago I beat Alan Wake: American Nightmare. I liked it but could have done without the deja vu levels. It works well but I would have rather played 9 different levels. Their arcade mode(a version of horde/firefight) is a nice addition even though it's always set to a 10 minute time limit. Anyway, this may not have been the sequel I've been waiting for but it was a nice distraction until the real one arrives.

    "Backlog Elimination 2012" marches on!

Finished Killzone 3 this morning. It was hard to notice the differences between this and Killzone 2 actually. Both are gorgeous looking Sci-Fi FPS's that suffer because of dumbass, hoo-rah, kill'em all plots. It's kind of funny to think at one time this franchise was hyped as Sony's "Halo Killer". Hilarious. Still a good game, but I'm glad I waited and didn't pay $59.99 at launch (especially for just the single-player).
