Default What to do with stick-on CD protectors?

I am referring to the clear adhesive type that was put on some early CD based games by well meaning collectors and/or shops. I think they were outlawed as game system drives got faster and the extra weight made the discs unbalanced. I have always hated them and, of course, one of my valuable games has one. I played the game through when I purchased it, so it does not seem to be causing harm.

The sticker is now 18 years old and seems to still be okay. I have always wondered if it is going to ruin my disc as it ages and the adhesive dries up and shrinks. I know they are impossible to remove.

Time to look for another disc, or should I just leave well enough alone? Looks like a $50 question per auction sites.

I was able to remove the protector sticker twice on ps1 games. No residue left and none of the CD cart came off.

If it's a valuable game, I would maybe keep it on just to be safe.

I highly doubt they were outlawed, just people realized they weren't as good of an idea as they'd thought and quit using them.

I've removed them before as well, but this actually reminds me that I bought a junk copy of Cyberia just to test out removal methods on Sega16. I guess I should get on that.
