Default MediEvil on PSX, any love?

Any fans out there of this cool Sony developed franchise? The production value of these games speaks to their first party status: the visual style, inspired and absorbing; the music, a lushly orchestral sort calling to mind Danny Elfman; the voice acting, full of character and well performed. The mix of exploratory hack-'n'-slash with rudimentary puzzle solving is a good one but I feel it's the atmosphere, more than the gameplay, that makes these games special. Anyone out there feel something for MediEvil?

The first part of an entertaining longplay of the first MediEvil on Youtube:

Didn't this game start out as a somewhat homebrew-ish project developed on the net yaroze?

I always wanted to play the sequel but was never able to get a copy.

Beat both on PS1 and got relatively far on the PSP entry. Had a ton of fun getting all all the weapons from the "Hall of Heroes" in the 1st game.

    An underrated series for sure.

This is a real gem in the playstation library - its a shame it gets overlooked so often. I remember playing the demo I received in a magazine back in the day and I went out and bought it the next day where me and my cousin tag teamed to beat it in single sitting :P

Lots of love my way. I absolutely love the original Medievil, but I've yet to play the sequel or the PSP game. They are both on my to-do list however. Hell, replaying the original game needs to be on my to-do list. Very original game that deserves much more spotlight than it gets.

The 2nd Medievil game, not so good.

Either way I'd still rather play Spyro!

Spyro was rubbish. Medievil was an awesome game. I gladly tossed aside Spyro for Medievil when I was a kid. Sadly, I never played the second, having been immediately rushed into the world of the next gen RPGs with Legend of the Dragoon and Ogre Battle 64.

A couple years ago, I gave this game a try. It felt kind of confusing and I didn't get into it. I put it back on the shelf and on my trade list. I later gave Ape Escape another chance, as I previously had the same negative reaction to it as I did MediEvil, and I ended up really enjoying it. Having learned my lesson, I went back to MediEvil and had the same enjoyable experience. I ended up completing it 100%.

I was sure I had created a thread over at playstationcollecting for this game, but I don't see it now.

I haven't looked into the sequel yet.

Yeah I had this disc on a demo back in the day and loved it, and played through the demo quite a few times. I always wanted to play through the whole game, but I was just a poor teen and never ended up getting around to buying the full game

Medievil was one of the funnest(if thats really a word) demos I have ever played. I enjoyed it so much that I went out and got the game. The controls were tight and the music was superb. I never beat it because I got stuck somewhere in the middle of the game. And I never picked up the second game or Psp version. But I did like this game alot back in the PS1 days.

    ^^

I had a ton of fun with the demo as well, I think it in one of the Pizza Hut promotions back then. I remember it being one of those random discs that we loved to pop in and play the same level again and again. I played it in that phase where I had to beg my parents for a new game few months so it never made that list against other games of the time. Apparently its a PS1 classic on PSN now so if anyone is interested and cant find a disc you can always get it there.

It's pleasant to see this consistently thumbs up attitude towards MediEvil. The general consensus seems to be that MediEvil 1 is the better of the two (more have played it, at least) but it's a tough call, in my opinion. There's genuine charm in the 19th century London setting in MediEvil 2 and the fact that the overall design is a subtle evolution from the first game means it should be a crowd pleaser. If nothing else, it's more content for those that dug the original. Some of the level design may be a little bland and the loss of the Hall of Heroes interludes strips some entertainment value from the game but I'd definitely recommend a playthrough.

A few stores locally have brand new copies of MediEvil Resurrection at $10, I've been eyeing it since the early days of the PSP but, for whatever reason, never jumped. Now may be the time.

Like others I've also only played a demo of the first game. I enjoyed it, but have never played anything beyond that.
Everything in the above post is opinion unless stated otherwise.
