Default Good NES games for high score competition

A buddy of mine has recently gotten into retro gaming (NES in particular). Because he lives across the country, I was thinking we could "play together" with some good old fashion high score competitions! What games do ya'll think lend themselves to high score competitions on the NES?

Also, are there any NES emulators that allow people to play games simultaneously?

One game that comes to mind for me is Life Force. Really fun game, tough and it can get competitive.

There are many NES games that keep score, so you should be able to find something.

    Castlevania
    Gradius
    Contra
    Jackal
    Super Mario Bros.
    Ninja Gaiden
    Rush N Attack
    Tetris

StarShip Hector has timed 2 and 5 minute modes, as does a 2010 Japanese homebrew game called Blade Buster. That, and obviously Tetris/Yoshi's Cookie/Dr. Mario.

I would avoid NES games, such as Kabuki Quantum Fighter, that don't display the high score when the game is finished. You can keep a watch on the high score while on your last life, but that isn't very reliable.

Some NES games that are good for keeping high scores are Rainbow Islands, PinBot, KungFu Heroes, Millipede, Sqoon, Dig Dug II, Kickle Cubicle, Zanac, Bomberman II, and Heavy Barrel.
