Did the last PS2 game just get released?

TecToy Mega Drive 4 was released in Brazil in 2009. That's a weird market, what with the taxes and high import costs. I think I remember hearing that the PS2 finally had an official release down there just a year or so ago, so there should be a few years worth of futbol games still to come.

I think the only games being releases for PS2 anymore are shitty sports games from EA and 2K.

Why Sports Games?? Bring out a Good Game that people will buy..

Because people like sports games, and buy sports games at the end of a system's life. If people didn't buy them, we wouldn't see this pattern every generation. You also see sports games at the end of a console's life cycle because the cost to produce is low enough (but definitely NOT zero) to have it still make money even with low sales. If not enough people buy them to cover the development costs, they don't get made any more.

Interesting though, one could argue that the Playstation isn't even dead yet since that new Japanese Final Fantasy boxset includes some PS reprintings. So I could see reprintings of Japanese releases lasting for several more years after the system is commercially dead for the rest of the world,

... The PS3 can play PS1 discs without any sort of emulation involved. So yeah, those PS1 reprints will keep on coming.

Something a bit more interesting than a sports game. The Final Fantasy XI expansion Seekers of Adoulin will be released for PS2 in Japan in 2013.

That's pretty crazy, if I may interject. I would have thought the base game would have evolved beyond the point of the PS2 being able to support it. If nothing else, wasn't the PS2 hard drive included with FFXI only 40 GB? (And does this mean you can still buy FFXI with the PS2 hard drive in Japan?)

You can't buy new PS2s with network adaptors or hard drives in Japan anymore. But you can use different hard drives with it.

And the Japanese version of the game only used 8 GB of data with the first two expansions installed; even with the other three I don't think it would go over 24 GB. Still plenty of space left.

I called Square-Enix a few weeks back and they gave me the "if there is demand then maybe we'll reconsider" on that one. They seem to actually know that they risk pissing off loyal fans (Let's face it, if you are playing the PS2 version it is because you have been playing it on the PS3 or you have been paying since March 2004)

It currently requires 20GB, they increased it a few months back, my PS3 doesn't like that though.
Edit: that is the PlayOnline partition AND the FFXI partition the real usage number is (ie the total data footprint) is probably about 13GB, and probably will increase to 14 to 15GB.

I was listening to a well informed podcast lately (Video Game Rescue?) and the host said that Brazil has recently allowed PS2s to finally be introduced to the country and thus I am sure we'll be seeing many PlayStation 2 titles be released in the next few years.

As for the U.S., I would not be surprised if the FFXI MMO expansion were to be released here.

There's a very good reason why piracy is so rampant over there. People will just buy modded PS2s under the table instead of buying legit ones.

I don't know why people are saying this now. Brazil did officially get the PS2 very, very late, but it happened a good three years ago.

According to this the last Japanese PS2 game will be released on March 27th, 2013. No word yet on rather the US PS2 will see this release next year or not.

Looks like it is a race to see whether the Dreamcast or the PS2 has the later last game release. Then again, the last *official* Dreamcast game release in Japan happened a few years ago, so if official is all we're talking about, it is a different story.

And now the system is officially dead in Japan. There will be no more shipments of PS2's made in Japan. Whats on store shelves are all thats left and once thats gone you will have to go to second hand shops. I wonder how soon the US will follow suit, although I think that might have already happened at most places already.

PS2, and as someone mentioned, Dreamcast, will enjoy additional releases in the upcoming years due to Kickstarter. But as far as official releases in the US, it does look like it's dead. I can't imagine they are going to release that Final Fantasy game in the US. It would be a good way to go out though.
